Democrats blocked plans for a House vote on sending President Barack Obama his fast-track trade bill, handing him an embarrassing defeat on a second-term priority just hours after he made a rare visit to Capitol Hill to seek their support.
In a 126-302 vote Friday, Democrats helped reject a displaced workers aid program that they usually support, because the defeat meant the House couldnt send the fast-track trade bill to Obama even if it passed in a symbolic vote.
We have to slow down, said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat. Whatever the deal is with other countries, we want a better deal for Americas workers.

(26,549 posts)If they voted for it, the TV ad next year with an ominous voice-over: "Representative _____ voted to take money away from sick and dying seniors, and give the money to lazy moochers"
The "plan" was to pass another bill that restores the Medicare cuts. But that doesn't stop the TV ad, and the explanation for why the ad is technically true but false overall can't fit in a TV ad.

(26,549 posts)And they're not going to pass TPA without TAA. So it will fail there. Then there will be a new round of bills to try and get TPA passed again. But they're running out of time due to the elections coming up, and they're getting more and more pressure from both party's bases to reject it.
It's still doable, but it's going to be harder.

(8,203 posts)embarrassing defeat to "the American workers win" with defeat of TAA - I have been around the horn - from TP - TPM - C&L's - to the hill - to Politico - this is the best explanation I could find..re this vote -
From Politico - After TAA failed, the House approved fast-track legislation, known as Trade Promotion Authority, in a 219-211 vote. But that vote was largely for show, because enactment of TPA is contingent on approval of TAA.
The House could vote again on TAA next week. If enough votes flipped to pass it, it would mean that TPA prevailed as well, because the two bills are interconnected.
House Republican leaders say they have 100 votes for TAA, and Democrats would need to provide 118 if another vote happens. On Friday, Democrats provided 40 votes for TAA, while 86 Republicans supported it. In other words, Democrats would need to essentially triple their vote total to pass the measure.

Kudos to those who voted for the likes of Rep. Slaughter -
"TAA has always been an absolute admission to me that there is going to be lots of lost jobs, Rep. Louise Slaughter, a top House Democrat from New York, said before the vote. Multiple Democrats echoed that sentiment on the House floor
