Hillary Clinton Delivers First 2016 Presidential Campaign Speech [FULL]
Published on Jun 13, 2015
Two months after announcing her presidential candidacy, Hillary Clinton holds the first official rally of her campaign Saturday, on Roosevelt Island in New York City.
At first rally, Hillary Clinton gives rationale for 2016 quest New York (CNN) Hillary Clinton took the stage on New York City's Roosevelt Island Saturday, looking to offer hundreds of supporters her answer to the question that has dogged her presidential campaign through its first two months: Why?
The Democratic frontrunner in the 2016 race used the stirring geography of the narrow island in New York City's East River to make a case for new economic policies designed to benefit the middle class -- and present herself as the candidate to make them happen.
"Prosperity can't be just for CEOs and hedge fund managers," Clinton told the crowd. "Democracy can't be just for billionaires and corporations. Prosperity and democracy are part of your basic bargain, too. You brought our country back. Now it's time, your time, to secure the gains and move ahead. And you know what? America can't succeed unless you succeed."
The rally marks Clinton's departure from the low-key and carefully choreographed small roundtable events that she's held in the first states to vote in the presidential nominating contest -- Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada -- since announcing her candidacy in April.
RELATED: In kicking off campaign, Hillary to emphasize more Rodham, less Clinton
Supporters began lining up at 6:30 a.m. for a rally that wouldn't begin until four hours later. Media flocked onto the narrow island, with 550 journalists requesting credentials.
And Clinton's aides welcomed the attention, billing the rally as the real launch of her campaign -- and of the case she'll make to voters for the next year and a half.
"This will be a new moment. We have had the spring training, now it is opening day," campaign chairman John Podesta told CNN. "I think, for us, this is an opportunity to lay out really the operating manual for where she wants to take the country."
Clinton's speech was not a detailed rollout of the policies that she'll advance over the course of the campaign. Instead, the former secretary of state previewed a list of critical policy issues while unveiling the specifics of how she'd tackle those issues over the course of the summer.
Saturday's event was also a chance for Clinton to introduce herself to a large media audience. The former first lady is nearly universally known, but aides hope she will be able to present herself in a different, softer light.
"She is a well-known figure but when you're asking the American people to support you as president, even if it is for the second time, there is no skipping of steps," said Jennifer Palmieri, the campaign's communications director. "If you want to understand Hillary Clinton, and what has motivated her career of fighting for kids and families, her mother is a big part of the story."
In that effort, the entire day will focus on Clinton. Although both Bill and Chelsea Clinton attended -- the first time either will appear at a campaign event -- they will not be the focus and are not expected to speak.
Some of Clinton's high-profile supporters flocked to the city for Saturday's rally, too.
Kasim Reed, mayor of Atlanta, told CNN that he decided to attend the event because he wants to "stand with Secretary Clinton."
"I think that people have really been waiting for this aspect of the campaign to begin," Reed said. "There is an enormous amount of pent up energy to get on with the campaign and go on our and making the case to folks why she should be the 45th president."
But well-known New York Democratic figures weren't treating Clinton as their party's presumptive nominee.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio didn't attend the rally in his own backyard, saying he's waiting for Clinton to present a "larger vision" for tackling income inequality.
RELATED: Hillary Clinton channels Roosevelts in first campaign rally
Republicans, looking to seize on the media attention around Clinton's event, bused supporters north from Washington on Saturday morning, with many leaving at 5:45 a.m. They handed out information about Clinton, including red sunglasses that say "Stop Clinton" and "Shady."
GOP presidential contenders, meanwhile, offered pre-buttals before Clinton even took the stage.
"Hillary Clinton's re-launch of her campaign doesn't change that her views are out-of-touch with mainstream America," Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker said in a statement.
The campaign rally was largely organized by Greg Hale, a long-time Clinton aide, who grew up in DeQueen, Arkansas, and met the Clintons when he was young. He started doing advance work for Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign and is the Clintons' go-to person for staging events like Saturday's.

To me it seems more critical than ever, particularly NOW, when women's reproductive rights are not just ignored or taking a back seat but are actively being rolled back.
I remember when Shirley Chisholm was briefly in the running. Long ago. My dad asked me who I might vote for - and I was just old enough to start doing so. I said "Shirley Chisholm." And he gaped, said "SHIRLEY CHISHOLM?????" And then he laughed at me.

(54 posts)For God's sake, Hillary, you've had 8 years.
She still sounds like she's reading off of cue cards. I'm talking about her tone, her enunciation, just the overall way she delivers a speech. She has always been awful at it and she still is. This is THE reason Obama beat her, and will be the reason Bernie Sanders may beat her, which does NOT bode well for the general election.
Hillary, we need you to win this primary. PRACTICE HOW TO DELIVER A SPEECH!

(4,458 posts)What she (or any of 'em) says...and whether or not her Record supports what she says; Is the hot issue, imo.
Not everyone has the Best or smoothest public speaking skills but they Do have quality and meaning in their words.
I can't fault them for having the same problems I do....
diamondhead
(54 posts)I'm sorry, but everybody in here who was at all impressed with that robotic reading is living in a bubble.
This is the kind of thing that drives the regular Joe to support one candidate over another. I'm not talking about the bubble people, I'm talking about the average voter out there who doesn't post on a political message board and who doesn't closely follow the issues. People want to be INSPIRED by a GOOD PUBLIC SPEAKER, and Hillary Clinton gave a pretty lame assed performance just now.
I would advise her to practice her speeches beforehand, and memorize as much of it as possible. She clearly didn't do that, or if she did, she really needs to do better. This was no Bill Clinton type delivery, and it most certainly was not an Obama type delivery. She was literally READING her speech in a monotone. Not good.
fredamae
(4,458 posts)Look, I support Bernie.....he is my candidate of choice.
At the same time, I can follow in Bernies footsteps and Not bash other candidates on the stuff that Doesn't matter (in the big picture) to the American people.
With respect...I disagree with you. I was a total HRC fan in '07/'08 and was deeply disappointed in her loss to BO.
HRC had the same "delivery" problems ... then. But I have come to realize, that isn't the point. The point is what she (and other candidates) have to say..no matter how "choppy" it may be. Not everyone is well suited to speak in public. I am certainly not. The thought of it sends me into "the spins" for some damned reason.
It is nearly impossible to find a public speaker that is Better than BO...and today he's pushing TPP ... When he ran, we heard what we wanted to hear and ripped the "red flags" apart before analyzing, imo.
Speaking for myself---I believe it is Most important to Listen to her (their) words and compare to records of service- Not grade her on her style. So she's a bit "stiff"-so what?
For me...that sure as hell isn't a disqualifier any more than Bernies hair is......for others.
diamondhead
(54 posts)You agree that she has delivery problems. And while they don't matter to YOU, they still matter. They matter a hell of a lot more than you might think. They are pretty much THE reason she lost to Obama. A bad delivery makes her look disingenuous and untrustworthy. This is just human psychology. I predict a DROP in her poll numbers after this, quite frankly. That speech was very poorly delivered.
If she doesn't work on this, Bernie Sanders may very well win the nomination. And then we're truly fucked. Hillary is the only candidate who can win the general election against the Republicans. Bernie can win the nomination, but he won't get the south or the midwest.
fredamae
(4,458 posts)"Not everyone has the Best or smoothest public speaking skills but they Do have quality and meaning in their words.
I can't fault them for having the same problems I do"
Perhaps "we" need to re-examine our own "style of Listening"? Maybe "we" are a bit too picky? We have to listen...not just "hear".
I'm guessing HRC has indeed worked very hard on this. She was a bit rough in the beginning, and still sounded/delivered better than in 2008....but I thought, after she got warmed up..she sounded good today.
I, like millions and millions of other people have heard some really rotten speakers who had/have a Hellava Lot to say that impact/impacted our lives.....
Personally, I'll be surprised if she has Any drop in numbers that can be tacked to her delivery.
MoonRiver
(36,926 posts)I don't like politicians shot shout and pound on things. Maybe some like that kind of drama, but I prefer speakers like Hillary, who present ideas in a calm, systematic and positive manner. She hit all the points that are important to me and didn't miss a beat.
fredamae
(4,458 posts)the bottom line here as we all move forward...with our preferred candidates?
It's about the message..not, imo...the delivery. A given message is going to appeal to you (or me) or not.
I mean, some can be that bad..but I'm not feeling it with the three top Dem candidates at this time.......
I thought she did very well. I thought she seemed genuine. Her event seemed well attended.
That is exciting for every Dem supporter out there...we have good choices. And that to me is way more valuable than the theatrics of it all.
And no, I don't care for a "Podium Pounder" either.

(1,916 posts)I mean this in the nicest possible way. I want her to succeed, but she is still awful at giving speeches to large crowds. Surely, there are coaches who can teach her how to take away the stiffness in her delivery. It's how Bill Clinton won, it's how Barack Obama won. People are turned off by robotic speeches, no matter their content. She needs to fix this now and fast.

(81,322 posts)Glad you're here! Nah - she's doing fine. I watched it on Youtube because we were out all morning. But I was able to see the comments here, so I tried to pay a little more attention to the delivery part of her speech.
Okay. I saw the speech. It was FINE. Every political speech has some singsongy parts because they repeat stuff, they do litanies of stuff. It allows the building to a crescendo. I saw no problems here re: her delivery. No biggie. She was FINE. Little bit of joking here and there, but forceful when she had to be. Sparks of warmth and informality but also all-business. This is one really magnificent and World-Class leader.
I said it in another thread elsewhere - I have been waiting my whole life to be able to cast a vote for a great woman politician for President of the United States. Not til Hillary have I seen ANYBODY this capable and well-qualified to sit behind the big desk. That goes for most of the men, too, particularly on the other side. And she's a veteran at this hardball stuff, too. She KNOWS what she's getting into. They've already thrown everything at her AND the kitchen sink AND the fridge AND the dishwasher AND the microwave AND the stove, AND everything in the laundry room. Hell, everything at the laundromat, too!!! She's got brains and guts and heart.
I remember when her husband won the title of President-Elect in 1992, with Fleetwood Mac playing in the background. That was AMAZINGLY exciting, especially since one of OURS didn't just win, he beat a sitting President with deep pockets and a lot of scheming meanies in high and low places alike and a sense of entitlement as big as all outdoors, and turned him out of office. And I was enthralled because the new First Couple was far closer to my age than I'd ever experienced before. I couldn't relate to george-and-barbara the 1st. ALL First Ladies of whom I became aware throughout my life were all my mom's age, or older. It just felt so completely different this time. And her kid wasn't all that much older than my daughter, and still lived at home, too. I remember being so moved and impressed and feeling so connected to her that I wrote her a letter - "Dear First Lady-Elect," and realizing, to riff on a cliche, that here was a woman I could go get a cup of coffee with. I felt in many ways, she was me. We shared the same experiences. Working woman; professional woman; working mom; sometimes made more than her husband did; had to supervise staff; had to multitask - juggling home-job-family-kid-kid's school-older parent; made her bones in arenas where many women hadn't yet really broken through. Hell, she even had hair style issues like I did. And there was the pantsuit thing. I think, for work, I wore a skirt maybe a few times a YEAR. Maybe. And Fleetwood Mac as their campaign song? Dayum! We even liked the same music - I PLAYED that stuff on the radio!
Incredibly impressed with her, and it is CLEAR she looks and behaves and gives off a vibe of being Presidential. She has that gravitas, TOO. WE have a woman candidate with GRAVITAS forcryingoutloud. For a good laugh, just consider for a moment what "comparable" versions the other side's got. You think carly fiorina has GRAVITAS??? Did sarah palin or michele freakin' bachmann have it? Are you KIDDING me???? They're a bunch of freakin' FLAKES. Look at it academically. If Hillary is post-graduate material, those other three are still being potty-trained, not even ready for pre-school yet. Hell, sarah palin won't EVER have gravitas if she lives 1,000 lifetimes.

for President. All my life. And with women's issues and ESPECIALLY women's reproductive rights in the bad guys' crosshairs, and Roe v Wade on the ropes, and bullshit SCOTUS rulings like Hobby Lobby, seems to me this is what we desperately need - and we need it NOW.
To those who are anti-, say what you will about her, but it's gonna be awfully hard to match or beat what she brings to the table. Whether in towering intellect, experience in government and international relations, perspective, potential, background, compassion, ability to take a punch and deliver a good one too, maturity, class, inclusiveness, credibility, flexibility, or sheer shrewdness.
I don't see any other woman out there with what she's got (hell, I don't see most of the MEN bringing a comparable skills set to the table). Look what the other team THINKS it has. I mean - (cough!) carly (derp!) fiorina??? Or their past "exemplars" like michele bachmann - or even sarah palin forcryingoutloud. Are you kidding me????? They aren't even worthy to be near the door of the closet where Hillary hangs her pantsuits, much less to touch the hem of her garment.

(75,480 posts)I am offering a critique, which should be respected in a Democracy. To follow in lockstep on every politicians' words is what fascists do. Hillary herself would be in complete agreement with me on this.

(146,317 posts)During the live thread, it seemed to me that snark was out of place. Snark away in my thread, though. You'll have plenty of company, I'm sure.
Cleita
(75,480 posts)But please don't call my criticism snark. It's a critique that is my opinion, which in a Democracy I'm entitled to have.
MineralMan
(146,317 posts)I'm also entitled to characterize that opinion. This is DU. We're all able to speak here, as long as we stay within the boundaries set by the owners of the site and avoid personal attacks.
Calling Hillary Clinton's speech an exercise in triangulation in the live thread for that speech was snark, in my opinion.
