Rich Californians: You値l have to pry the hoses from our cold, dead hands

RANCHO SANTA FE, CALIF. — Drought or no drought, Steve Yuhas resents the idea that it is somehow shameful to be a water hog. If you can pay for it, he argues, you should get your water.

People “should not be forced to live on property with brown lawns, golf on brown courses or apologize for wanting their gardens to be beautiful,” Yuhas fumed recently on social media. “We pay significant property taxes based on where we live,” he added in an interview. “And, no, we’re not all equal when it comes to water.”

Yuhas lives in the ultra-wealthy enclave of Rancho Santa Fe, a bucolic Southern California hamlet of ranches, gated communities and country clubs that guzzles five times more water per capita than the statewide average. In April, after Gov. Jerry Brown (D) called for a 25 percent reduction in water use, consumption in Rancho Santa Fe went up by 9 percent.

But a moment of truth is at hand for Yuhas and his neighbors, and all of California will be watching: On July 1, for the first time in its 92-year history, Rancho Santa Fe will be subject to water rationing.

Who cares about the 1% and its perfect greens.

Golf wasn't meant to be played perfectly.

Rich assholes think they're entitled to all they want of even a scarce resource, and to hell with everybody else. These douchenozzles are already using 5 times as much water as everybody else, but God forbid they should have to endure brown lawns!

Fuck them.

Damming Rancho Santa Fe for a few days might just get them to start spending on bottled water!

It is a wonder Steve can find the strength to not take his own life at the mere prospect of such horror!

He is a hero.

He's a conservative radio loudmouth.. probably a local one, since I've never heard of him, and googled him. This Wiki entry came up.

Oh, and he's openly gay.

QUIT FARMING IN THE CENTRAL VALLEY!!11!1!1 Funny, we never hear the howls of outrage for, oh, let's say, Napa or the Central Coast. Take a minute and see what the per capita income is in all those places and the per capita income in the Central Valley. Do we see a pattern here?

30 gallons of water for a glass of wine.

Water that used to feed mighty Redwood forests, salmon & salamanders. All wiped out for some old grape juice that gets shipped off to a wealthy corporatist who gorges themselves on the finest delicacies this world can produce while assuring it will no longer produce anything else, for anyone else, again.

Mighty Christian of them.

How much of California's water is used to make residential grass green and cars clean? And how much of it is used to grow almonds in the desert?

I hear both sides.

I've read several accounts lambasting Hollywood celebs for their green lawns and I've heard that this usage doesn't even make a dent in the water that California requires.

and HATED it.

It was quite different then...mostly orange/lemon groves and lots of horses...out in the middle of
nowhere. My dad--a native Californian--had bought property there in the 1930's and always planned
to retire there...which he did in 1965 from NJ.

But, times have changed, although I suspect the political make-up of the town has not.
My parents were huge Republicans. I used to puke when I'd come back for a visit and
see a photo of Ronnie Reagan hanging on the wall in the kitchen.

Here's the source of their water: http://www.sfidwater.org/index.aspx?page=42

We've had water restrictions here for years and life goes on. It's exactly the same as when there's fire restrictions. Only a complete wanker's going to want to wander round with an open flame on days when it's scorching hot and windy...

I don't know how they're doing it in California, but here we have levels for the water restrictions depending on how much water's in dams and stuff. Unless the restrictions are at the highest level, people who are all precious about their lawns can water them at night every few days.

After all, it is the capitalist solution. Charge them $1 a gallon for any over their allotment. They can have their green lawns, if they want it bad enough.
