(25,397 posts)You may or not remember, I worked for Ken Lay before his Enron days and before my airline days. I flew Learjets and Lockheed JetStar IIs for the company he headed at the time. He was an easy guy to work for, but he was a tyrant concerning shellfish. Never, ever have any shellfish on the company jets when Kenny-Boy was on board. But I certainly understand and respect your and Ken Lay's allergies. I just hope you never swindled the state of California, and millions of others like Kenny-Boy did (I know you didn't)!

(11,256 posts)At my last company we had an intern with the same allergy unbeknownst to us. We also had all kinds of free food all over the place left over from meetings etc. This not so bright intern ate some of this food that was lying around one day. He then started to swell up and he asked what the food was - he ate two crab cakes. Off to the hospital for him - had to stay overnight.
He decided to always have his epi-pen with him after that.
A few weeks later, he ate some more random food that had shrimp in it...this time he had his epi-pen...and the boss told everyone not to eat anymore shellfish until his internship was over.
He was a Yale physics Phd, but not very bright to eat random food with such a severe allergy.
He didn't get a job offer after the internship ended.

(149,620 posts)I know I've seen these before, but it doesn't matter. They are STILL wonderful, and they STILL take my breath away.
You, sir, have a considerable talent and we are so lucky to be able to see your work.
Wow. Thank you!

(53,339 posts)And I've been to Grayton Beach, only because I've stayed nearby a few times at a friend's condo in Santa Rosa Beach, between Grayton and Seaside.
Now I'm going to have to do some steamed spiced shrimp soon.

(25,397 posts)I've been going to those beaches since about 1955. My late mother and most of her seven sisters celebrated the end of WW-II at Grayton Beach. We used to drive from Blue Mountain Beach to Grayton (3 miles?) on 30A, which was a sand and oyster shell road! My dad and uncles would drink beer while we kids played pool at the Grayton Beach general store (now the insanely crowded Red Bar).
I'm lucky now, in that my youngest brother has a house at Grayton.

(53,339 posts)My friend with the condo is the widow of a Navy aviator whose plane was shot down in the South China Sea off North Vietnam during the war. He was in a fighter squadron off the Enterprise, the pilot of an F-4. He was listed as MIA for some years and she went to the Paris peace talks to try to get info from North Vietnamese delegates, but eventually his status was changed to KIA. His copilot was recovered and captured by the North Vietnamese and spent 7 years as a POW before his release.

(25,397 posts)I love the festive Transylvania barn too. It is along one of the French Broad River fork roads (I forget which one), between Rosman and the back gate road to Conestee Falls and the Greenville highway near Brevard, NC.
But my favorite, by far, is the shot of the Apalachicola Bay oyster boats in the rain. Spontaneous. Serendipitous. Bad light (the background is so totally blown out!). The oysterman with the umbrella, seemingly guiding his boat's skipper. It was a cold rain, in February. An "R" month, you know. The peeps need their oysters.

(25,397 posts)I was born in Mobile, Alabama. So I am a child of the Gulf Coast. Those slightly inland blackwater lakes often have a perennial or semi-perennial cut into the Gulf of Mexico. Those cuts, through the beach sands into the Gulf (or backwards, Gulf to lake), have fascinated me since I was a small tyke. So now, I spend hours on those cuts, corroding tripod legs in the salt water, mid-calf deep in winter Gulf waters, watching for the buried stingray, to get these shots.

(25,397 posts)I was an aviation writer/editor for a couple of international aviation magazines. I did pilot reports on new jets. Sometimes I had a pro aviation photographer in tow (especially for air-to-air from a chase airplane). Names like Mike Fiser and Geoeff Nesossi come to mind. But I often shot my own static shots of the aircraft and close details.
That was in the film days. I shot with my trusty Pentax Spotmatic II's, and a TLR Rollieflex format. So, I was getting paid for both the photos and the articles.

(16,064 posts)That was my playground in the 70's. I grew up in the Panhandle of FL.
They have destroyed Panama City Beach. It was so beautiful then.
And there is nothing like an Apalachicola Oyster straight off the boat. I little hot sauce....heaven

(60,010 posts)It is the Festive Barn which moves me the most, something about the quality of the light, and the richness of the colors.

(35,675 posts)Yes, indeed, you really have "the eye:"
-The patterns in the beach shot.
-The blue-to-white-to gold contrast on the Rich Mountain Road shot.
-The colors and perspective on the Gulf Coast sunset photo.
-Even the hands of the person holding the shrimp.
Thank you so much for taking the time to post your photos and share them with us.

I live near Chicago but have traveled many times to the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. Last year my wife and I rented a cabin for a week near Brevard, and spent the days hiking. I have also done some overnight backpacking in the Shining Rock Wilderness, Wilson Creek Wilderness, GSMNP, and Panthertown Valley.
Thanks for the pics.

(10,495 posts)BP caused such devastation that Apalachicola Bay has no oysters. Gov., Rick Scott, not known for generosity had to put the whole town of Eastpoint, Fl., (Other side of Apalchicola Bay from Apalchicola) on welfare and retrain them to be either a prison guard, welder, or truck driver. You won't hear this on the TV (except Ed Schultz) because BP is the biggest advertiser on the Gulf Coast)!
