"We want to blow the whistle on this before it happens," Schumer told The Associated Press. "Enough already! They charge a fee for peanuts, for leg room, for just about anything."

New York Sen. Charles Schumer wants airlines to scrap a proposal to reduce the allowed size of carry-on luggage.
He warns that a 20 percent reduction would force travelers to pay more for check-in fees or spend money on millions of pieces of new luggage.
The Democratic senator says its just another way for airlines to make money at the expense of travelers.
Schumer says customers deserve a break, especially since airline profits are expected to soar this year.

(39,374 posts)This is how he gets on the local news at least 20-30 Sunday nights a year. They have an info void and he fills it regularly, blasting easy targets and making himself look attentive to constituents in the process. Not my favorite Senator but he is a workhorse.

(285 posts)...shrink my carry on from 22" to 21.5" and make me buy more luggage. Like that half inch will make a difference except in fees they charge

Get rid of those damned overhead bins and go back to hat and coat racks up there. Boarding the plane and getting off will be three times faster. Flying was a lot more pleasant back when it was just hat and coat racks.

(285 posts)TSA Searched your bags
TSA Broke you luggage locks
Airports Lost your bags
Airlines charged excessive fees
Airports made you wait an hour to get your bags
Airport handlers throw your bags around and destroy them
And forget it if you want to fly standby when the airlines cancel your flight for no reason
Back airline travel was an experience, now I'd almost rather take Greyhound

(30,884 posts)Standardizing on three maximum dimensions rather than on the old unified inches eliminates most small duffels and and backpacks in favor of framed luggage pieces like rollaboards.
I've always been careful to purchase carry-on bags that are well within the limits and I'd still have trouble with the new standard.

(36,827 posts)I see people routinely carrying 3 carry ons. They fill up the overhead bins and then the people who get on last have to check their bags.

That, and airline greed of course.

(5,523 posts)Since loading and unloading takes ever longer and airlines are probably losing valuable flight time, there is a simple solution. Baggage should be checked for free as it used to be. Carry on, other than a purse or purse size bag would be charged a fee. Less people struggling with the overheads would be nice. I've been beaned on the head a number of times by dropped or swinging bags. Also there are loading and unloading algorithms which speed up the process IF everyone complies. Like that's going to happen. I think loading from the back to the front and unloading from the front to the back is best. The average time for everyone is the same then. Less bottlenecks for those heading to the rear. Just my two cents. While traveling for work, my bags have never been lost for good, but they were "lost" sometimes for a few days, so I always carried on some essentials. I wouldn't mind paying for the privilege if I had to.

(26,582 posts)I went with the international sized, which is smaller than what the US carriers allowed. It even fit in the overhead of a regional jet.
