In the late 80s I was working as a Victim Advocate out of the State's Attny office in northern vermont. There was a wide search on for two escaped prisoners from Georgia who were thought to be in Vermont. I don't remember now why anyone thought they'd be in Vermont, but it was the topic in our office and the State Police Barracks on the Canadian Border. It was around this time of year. It's black fly season in mid June in Vermont and the Adirondacks, and it can be bad.
After a few days, the Barracks got a phone call from the escapees asking to be picked up. They'd been in the woods, near a swampy slow moving river and the black flies had been swarming and biting them for days. They simply couldn't take it anymore.
I couldn't help but think of that story in regard to the two escapees from NY.

(14,532 posts)the lines of what I have been thinking. Their ride out never showed up. These men have never had to survive in the wilderness. Sure there are some cabins, but they can't stay in one place for long. Hiking/camping for days is hard enough for people accustomed to it. These 2 are definitely not. Hunger, fatigue, like you mentioned .. bugs. OMG the bugs.
A few years ago we had a cop shooter on the loose in the woods in my area. His buddy turned himself in after 2 days of hiding, couldn't take it anymore. The next day they found the shooter, hungry, disheveled, and too tired to run. These were 2 men that knew the area and capable of living off the land for some time.
So unless these 2 managed another ride out, they will be caught.
So they're going to be 'bugged out"?
That would be a fitting conclusion.
Seriously though, how low was that lady's self esteem and how loveless is her life for her to help murderers escape because they made her feel needed and wanted?
Well she'll get prison now instead of being murdered by them.

(3,186 posts)It's pretty much the same thing here.
We suffer through the long winters and mud season, until summer finally arrives. But as soon as it does, those damn black flies ruin everything!
I'd rather deal with mosquitoes and even those annoying copperhead things.

(114,904 posts)it can be quite something. When I first moved to Vermont, I thought people were being silly with all their dire warnings about about black fly season. I was quickly disillusioned of that, my first June here. Now, decades later, they don't bother me much at all.
But they really can affect some people terribly. The thing is that they attack in swarms.

Itching and localized swelling and inflammation sometimes occurs at the site of a bite. Swelling can be quite pronounced depending on the species and the individual's immune response, and irritation may persist for weeks. Intense feeding can cause "black fly fever", with headache, nausea, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and aching joints; these symptoms are probably a reaction to a compound from the flies' salivary glands. Less common severe allergic reactions may require hospitalization.[8][9]

(23,946 posts)CNN executives have concluded two escaped cons from NY, in a nation of 340 million, is just under what is required.
Besides, the 7 days for the 3 slected main fear and horror issues, on perpetual loop for the current week, had expired.
What will CNN's new weekly cycle be?
Anyone remember how the mass media managed to terrorized the entire nation over Ebola? That was a huge success for the Terror Industry of America.
