I watched bits and parts of it. I desperately wanted to watch the whole thing but a friend of my girlfriend's daughter just graduated from UCLA and they made her a small informal graduation party which I was compelled to attend.
I support Hillary Clinton because she's smart. persistent, battle hardened, and most of all relishes a good fight...
I don't t believe she is a natural extrovert which is the basis for what we colloquially call a natural politician but she ie earnest. I don't believe she is a naturally gifted public speaker.
Charisma is subjective and can be used for good or evil or some mixture between the two. Idi Amin was charismatic as was Mao and Josef Stalin. So was John Kennedy, Franklin Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln...
I have seen gifted and not so gifted politicians and public speakers rise to the presidency. Presidents Kennedy, Reagan and Obama fall in the former category and Presidents Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Bush Pere, and George Walker Bush fall in the latter.
Conclusion-being a great politician and speaker is helpful but it is not dispositive.
Elections are about choices...It's not as if the Republicans have some great charismatic potential candidate looming in 2016.

(14,255 posts)I can get what I need to know from the internet, and I am a deeds, not words type of person.
Also, I have been condescendingly told that it is okay to lie when campaigning, because the only objective is to WIN, so why bother?
Sometimes I feel that people only listen to campaign speeches so they can find fault with them.

(17,997 posts)While I have a different opinion about her and the speech than you do, I still think she did a really good job delivering it.

(99,710 posts)She is better than a layperson at delivering a speeches but I don't believe that's one of her strengths... I believe her biggest strength is her mind numbing persistence.

(17,997 posts)Just thought you might want the impression of a Bernie supporter. I really did think she delivered the speech well

(99,710 posts)I get upset at the crap, some of it subtle and some of it not so subtle, tossed at me on this board... If I got a fraction of the crap tossed at Hillary I don't think I could make it out of bed.

(114,904 posts)much better at this than she was in 2007-2008. She seemed far more relaxed and engaged.

(99,710 posts)My totally subjective list of post war presidents
-HST- not charismatic but feisty
-Ike- not charismatic but had a terrific life story
-JFK- Charisma in bundles
-LBJ-not charismatic but a sage politician
-RMN- see LBJ
- Ford- not charismatic
- JEC- not charismatic but found the sweet spot in the electorate after the excesses of Watergate
- RWR- charismatic
-GHWB-not charismatic
-WJC- Charismatic and empathetic
-GWB- not charismatic but found the sweet spot in the electorate
-BHO-charismatic
It seems being a great pol is important but part of being a successful politician is to get elected and to do that a person has to figure out where the sweet spot in the electorate is and occupy it. Elections are more about getting folks who are inclined to vote for you to actually vote for you than persuading someone who is inclined to vote against you to vote for you.
I saw Larry Sabato on CNN... He said the dirty secret of the campaign is that 90% of Americans have already decided how they would vote. I would disagree with him... It's more like 93 or 94%.

(25,111 posts)Anywho at this point in time I assume that's correct.

(24,689 posts)BTW, Sabato is a smart guy and I suspect he is correct which is why Hillary is in very good shape both for Dem nominee and for POTUS.

(36,418 posts)I always thought that being able to deliver a good crowd raiser from the stump was almost a must for a politician. Bill was a natural, gifted public speaker who also had warmth, a big smile, and an infectious love for up-close interaction with constituents. Hillary is no Bill.

(99,710 posts)A lot of folks would say The Huckster is charismatic... I cut my teeth in sales and I am confident when I say Mike Huckabee would have made a great salesperson but as charismatic as he is and as good a salesperson as he would have been he's not good enough to sell a plurality or majority of Americans on the notion it's good to go back to the 1950s so there's that.
Part of being a good politician is identifying where the sweet spot of the electorate is and I believe Hillary and her team is doing just that.

(99,710 posts)However lots of candidates have risen to the presidency who weren't great natural politicians.
