The worst fear of the Koch brothers has always been that people will learn about their activities and fight back. On Face The Nation, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) announced that people are fighting back, and his campaign now has more than 200,000 donors.
Video @ link~
Transcript via CBS Face The Nation:
Hillary Clinton in her speech yesterday talked about the unaccountable money that is distorting elections. Youre only taking small donations. She has a super PAC. Is that one of those distinctions voters is that a big distinction or little distinction between you two?
SANDERS: I think it is, John.
Look, let me be very clear. This disastrous Citizens United Supreme Court decision is undermining American democracy. And when you have a family like the Koch brothers, second wealthiest family in America, going to be spending more money in this campaign than either the Democratic or Republican parties, I worry about us moving toward oligarchy, where our political system is controlled by the rich and the powerful.
I am raising money from small individual contributions. BernieSanders.com has raised now some 200,000 people have sent in small contributions. I dont have a super PAC. I dont want money from the billionaires. And thats the way were going to run our campaign.
DICKERSON: Senator, one last question. We have just very little time here. If the system is corrupt, does that also mean that the lawmakers who are accepting money are also corrupt?
SANDERS: It means that you have a campaign finance system which is absolutely corrupt.
Look, American democracy does not mean that billionaires should be able to buy elections and buy candidates. We have got to overturn the Citizens United Supreme Court decision. And, in my view, John, we have got to move public funding of elections.
The worst nightmare of all oligarchs is popular rebellion. Bernie Sanders is speaking for millions of Americans who are not going to sit back and allow the Kochs and corporations to purchase the federal government through a corrupt campaign finance system.
Some in the Democratic Party establishment arent getting why Bernie Sanders is popular. Sen. Sanders is popular because he is addressing issues that matter most to people who are just getting by or having trouble paying their bills.
The candidacy of Bernie Sanders is not rooted in protest. There is an authentic populist anger in this country that should frighten the Koch brothers and other conservative billionaires.
Bernie Sanders is bringing national attention to the role of the Koch brothers and others in our elections. The Sanders movement is growing, and the right-wing billionaires should be very afraid.

(15,480 posts)I posted this on my FB page:
"I just signed up for monthly contributions through November, 2016, & ordered a bumper sticker. Check out his site berniesanders.com to learn about him. He not only takes explicit stands on issues, he has been consistent for his 20+ years in the senate. Unlike his primary opponent, he does not now nor ever has triangulated, or used focus groups to determine what political stand he takes . See what he supports re actions on Income and Wealth Inequality, Getting Big Money Out of Politics and Climate Change and Environment for starters. I'm telling you, he's the most honest politician I've ever heard."
I'll be posting one pro-Bernie item a day on my FB page - and each one will spread the word like ripples in a pond, because I have FB friends in state and national organizations. Go Senator Sanders!

(3,732 posts)I have to admit years of "politically panhandling" led me to auto-route most of those emails to a black hole. But Bernie has made political donations meaningful again. I'm going to work with my Mom to make a donation.

(16,846 posts)money in the past, but I chose to make my first contribution to Bernie. I felt good about it and didn't miss the money one bit. I'll keep donating more as the campaign progresses, just small donations. If enough of us contribute, he should have enough to do what he needs to do to win. Bernie seems like the type of guy who can get his money's worth from what he has. That's probably due to growing up poor.

(3,732 posts)I think the number of people contributing will make a real difference, as opposed to the amount.
I hope his campaign won't badger, though!

(16,846 posts)I got an email thanking me for my donation and I get emails from time to time informing me about the campaign, but I don't get those constant pleas for money that other orgs send out. I'm sure he knows that most of his supporters aren't people of means, and he doesn't want to bother people too much.

The Citizen's United ruling just allowed things which had been done in the shadows before to be done in the open. As a nation, we need far more reaching restrictions on campaign donations and completely open candidates.
I like to think the talking heads on established media want to discuss these issue on a personal level, but are restricted by the owners. I fear I am wrong, but I like to think that.

(1,151 posts)In the 2012 election I believe every single Koch backed candidate lost. In the 2014 election dems did not bother to vote. Since then we got to see what Koch candidates look like and we are mortified by the likes of the GOP legislators. We watch them do nothing and we know who these people are. I am only worried about our vote being hacked again. I think we all understand that the diebold voting machines are easily manipulated. I worry that instead of trying to win votes the GOP and Kochs will concentrate on stealing elections rather than winning them.
In this election being connected to the Kochs will and should be a black spot.

(5,178 posts)This isn't about protest, this is about retaining a viable ecosystem.
About small changes we can make today to protect the humans and animals who come after us, to prevent them from being born into horrible misery because of the selfishness of a minority today.
About sacrifice for the greater good. Something the Kochs, Dimons, Summers and their servants of this world don't comprehend. I can just picture them hearing stories about old relatives who saved and donated tin and scrap metal, bought war bonds and got the most out of the least, and watching them glaze over with confusion, revulsion & boredom.

The strength of Bernie's movement is its popularity.
In the USA, it is still One Man, One Vote.
