Greece and creditors fail in 'last attempt' to reach deal

alks on ending a deadlock between Greece and its international creditors broke up in failure on Sunday, with European leaders venting their frustration as Athens stumbled closer toward a debt default that threatens its future in the euro.

European Union officials blamed the collapse on Athens, saying it had failed to offer anything new to secure the funding it needs to repay 1.6 billion euros ($1.8 billion) to the International Monetary Fund by the end of this month.

Greece retorted it was still ready to talk, but that EU and IMF officials had said they were not authorized to negotiate further. Athens insists it will never give in to demands for more pension and wage cuts.

"This is very disappointing and sad. It was a last attempt to bridge our differences but the gap is too large. One can discuss a gap, but this is an ocean," said a person who was close to the talks.

Greece has to keep its economy going somehow. It is desperate as I understand it. It isn't a choice of nothing or something. I think it is a choice of surviving or not. It's Europe that is making the big mistake.

Greece is in a strategically important position. Russia could strangle countries like Ukraine and several in between if it had more access to Greece. The last thing Northern Europe needs is to have a sizable segment of the Greek population view Russia as a benevolent friend and savior.

9. Yeah, and Northern Europe knows that. The creditors know all that, too.

As for Greece's economy tanking, that's a given now.

Not much of an economy if they're options are reduced to begging or whoring.

Shops are shut down, people are out of work, and people are going hungry. If they continue this policy, they will have a full scale revolution to deal with and nobody wants that.

One wonders why the EU, especially the Germans, are so intransigent. I suppose the Germans have short memories that don't extend to just after World War II.

full radio address to the German people). By the same token, I give the Greeks tremendous credit for messing with the Italians so much that Hitler had to delay the start of Operation Barbarossa by six precious summer weeks. If Aristotle and Plato aren't enough, can we also say that the first Western democracy saved all of the world for democracy? The entire civilized world owes Greece an immense debt of gratitude which we can never repay. Shame on the EU.

Greece is becoming an increasingly desperate society.

Promising stuff you can't deliver or won't deliver is not statesmanlike.

I expected capitulation.

Now, the EU needs to be more reasonable.
