Well, isn't that special...
I think were being overly penalized, and were certainly being overly scrutinized by the world, said Gay Butler, an interior designer out for a trail ride on her show horse, Bear. She said her water bill averages about $800 a month. It angers me because people arent looking at the overall picture, Butler said. What are we supposed to do, just have dirt around our house on four acres?
I call it the war on suburbia, said Brett Barbre, who lives in the Orange County community of Yorba City, another exceptionally wealthy Zip code. <snip> He is fond of referring to his watering hose with Charlton Hestons famous quote about guns: Theyll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands.
Yuhas, who hosts a conservative talk-radio show, abhors the culture of drought-shaming that has developed here since the drought began four years ago, especially the aerial shots of lavish lawns targeted for derision on the local TV news.

(16,286 posts)landscaping that is so awesome the local paper wanted to do a spread on it...
If I had a SO who is heartbroken she cant have her green lawns, if all this was true, I would still do the right thing.
It would be a no brainer.
If I had all this and I had to make this decision, one upside would be less cost to me for the guy mowing the lawns.
But that could be a problem for him.
TWO DAYS WATERING, WHAT THE FUCK
I was sure all Californians were told NO watering

Grass should be outlawed. period. in most of the US.
The fumes from mowers, fertilizer, weed killer, etc., are luxuries we can't afford anymore. They dirty the air, kill weeds that feed some birds, and are harmful to bees. Only plants in the food chain should be excepted for cause.
Native grass and tree planters should be subsidized by the government, with seeds of same provided and information on growing them.

(21,691 posts)I live in an "exceptionally wealthy zip code" where we pay "significant property taxes" and my neighbors and I have mostly brown yards except for the drought-tolerant native plants (and my roses, which never get watered but are right over the septic tank). Yes, residential water use isn't the biggest problem, but it all adds up.
