Alaska seems to be going up in flames. It's above 80 degrees here, sunny with no chance of rain for at least a week.

Fire crews are responding to a wildfire near Mile 77 of the Sterling Highway. The report came in just before 2 p.m. Monday, about 24 hours after the now-6,500 acre fire north of Willow began Sunday afternoon.
Danny Seavey says the Sterling fire is located about two miles from the familys residence on Montana Street.
Emergency officials say the fire is now an estimated 640 acres, as of 7 p.m. At least six structures have been lost, the BLM Alaska Fire Service confirms.

A Division of Forestry incident command team is responding, and five choppers are working the fire. Voluntary evacuations are in place for all of Feuding Lane from the Sterling Highway to the Kenai Keys at the Kenai River.
At about 6:30 p.m., the evacuation was expanded to include residents living in the area of Salmon Run Drive to the end of Fishermans Road and Dow Island.

It's discouraging that we cannot come together as a nation to start fixing this.

(46,436 posts)If they're at the Park, they might need to go back up to Fairbanks and come down the other highway, but that is quite a long trip. The other option is going across the Denali Highway, but that's 100+ miles of unpaved road, max travel speed 30-40 mph.

(46,436 posts)but the air quality is pretty bad. If there's ever a wildfire on the Hillside here, though, it will be disastrous.

(46,436 posts)It used to be really rare for us to get 80 degree days down here in Southcentral, but it's becoming more and more common. Fairbanks has always had hot weather in the summer and very cold weather in the winter.

(46,436 posts)The air quality is pretty bad today here in Anchorage. I'd like to be outside working in the garden, but it's really smoky and makes me cough. It's a pity to waste these 75-degree days, but I like breathing.

(90,787 posts)I don't miss the brush fires in Colorado Springs. When I think back on them, I laugh at myself. The news would report a brush fire and I'd wonder if I could get to where I needed going before it spread too close. Because, you know, I didn't have the sense to not go near the fires that day.
My being an idiot is funny, but those fires were no laughing matter.

(46,436 posts)I do hate staying inside, though, when the weather is so warm and beautiful. I was going to go out and pull chickweed, but my husband wouldn't let me.

(90,787 posts)Warm days are meant to be enjoyed - outside. Curse the chickweed from your window. Might help.
