The cops are just finally getting called out for doing this because of cell phone camera's. In the past it would have just gotten swept under the rug. Doesn't seem to matter though. The cops realize that they can commit murder and be video taped, and not a damn thing will happen to them. Look at the guy they killed for selling loose cigarettes. Cops don't give a shit because District Attorney's don't.

Cops who use excessive force need to lose their jobs and the fines should come out of the police departments own funds.

Individuals with any past indications of racism, hatred of "others", spousal/child abuse should not be hired. There should be a thorough investigation of their backgrounds and participation in "social media".

All people in the chain of command that hire an officer need to be held responsible for their deeds. I know you suggest that the police department should pay fines. I'd rather that the chain of command have a significant (50%?) of their salary/paycheck dependent on how they performed - evaluated by an outside board with absolutely no hint of a trace of a connection to the police or other governing bodies.

From another thread, some bureaucrat com complained that they couldn't find enough AA people to serve on the force. This is a self-fulfilling situation, and one that the current boys-in-blue want to keep going.

There needs to be different criteria for hiring, and that includes being more lenient on past drug use. The fact that the questions are designed to weed out imperfect people is one of the reasons why they have so many lying assholes. They had to be good at lying from there first interview. I was a criminal justice major in college, and I wouldn't want most of the students I went to college with to carry guns and a badge. They'd smoke weed and get drunk at party's every weekend and then act like saints when in class talking to professors. That was when I knew I wasn't cut out to be a cop. I was too honest and didn't know how to lie.

i was in the army (not US) for a while

towards the end i did training and got to see the paper work on both 'flunked before they reached us applicants' and
'flunk at us (our unit) applicants' due to the training they were 'followed for a few years after flunking if they got partial training

a lot went from flunk (either for army, for pre-screening for this unit, or flunk during training) ...to police academy

Did anyone else watch the video, or read the small blurb of info at the link? One of the girls has a broken jaw and broken ribs. It was the 12 year old, I believe. Plus she is is being charged with that old standby lie 'Resisting arrest'.

And if all this is not bad enough, the person reviewing the case claims that the whole thing was justified. I think...(might need to go back and re-read- the whole thing has a surreal quality to it- hard to absorb)... The fact that this crap keeps happening over and over again is incomprehensible.

We need to DO something! Letters to my congresscritters are a given, but would letters to the DOJ help? How about Ohio congressmen of that district, as well as Ohio's AG's office? Any other ideas?

I can't begin to imagine what it's like being black in America. I've seen, from my years of riding the bus, that as a white middle class woman, I am treated with more respect than Black/Hispanic women. I've heard things said to minority women that would never have been said to me. Never.

You know how people get on the bus & look for a seat that isn't by anyone else? Well, the seat next to me is always the last one taken as the bus fills up. They let the privileged white woman sit alone for as long as possible. It was really an eye-opening experience for me when I realized that this happens all the time.

This so reminiscent of the pool party video from a couple of weeks ago.

Very calmly ASSISTING the police officers, while any black kid that came near them was wrestled to the ground, handcuffed or had a weapon drawn on them. Big ol' white guy in the previous video was clearly not at the pool or the pool party, but he was given free access to the scene without the cops batting an eyes. Skinny white dude was in swim suit and most likely at the pool (but maybe not part of the party?), yet he, too, is just allowed to act in concert with the cops, as if he also held a badge or something. Seriously effed up.

I'm going with white privilege again. Once on the Interstate I had my car set on cruise control and was changing lanes. An officer pulled me over. I was cool and thought, 'Okay,' and got out. Wasn't met by a SWAT team, either.

Mind you, this was years ago, and it was just the single guy. I got out to talk to him, and my Kid gets out. For some reason, Kid walks up to the cop, kicked him in the shins and jumped on his shoes, dumbfounding me.

Kid hollers, 'Leave my mom alone!'

I had to pull Kid off the cop! Imagine a black kid doing that?

But I don't have to imagine, because 20 years before in my mixed city neighborhood the police pulled over a black lady for one of those 'tail light stops.' Then they 'Called her out of her name.'

Her elementary school age boy got out and told them to stop cursing at his mother. This is natural, IMO. Well, long story short, both of them were cuffed and beaten up. I found this very offensive as she was a woman, a mother and her son was trying to stand up for her reputation.

That little boy hadn't laid a hand on the police and his mother had committed no crime worth what they did. To her. And to her child.

At that time, a number of black mothers explained to me the reality of 'growing up black' from their POV. Demonstrations happenedd over it and other abuses until a real civilian police review board was set up.

My privileged self was given a verbal warning about changing lanes to keep at cruise control speed limit. And my Kid?

Not a damn thing. I was afraid something would be done, because Kid 'assaulted' the cop and scuffed his shoes. Not one thing was said or done, the cop just stood there and took it.

I fussed at Kid when we got back in the car, but Kid was adamant. We continued home, where I nagged the Kid a lot more.

I posted something on the police departments webpage after I read about this. It was a fucked up situation to begin with because the mother should have never been forced to show ID. I took a look at the state law online and the police were dead wrong. After that they just escalated the whole thing from a misapplication of the law (demanding ID) to criminal behavior themselves.

Not to decrease it.

We know the corporations are looking to increase and incite violence. War is money for them.
If that war lessens the amount of minorities around, even better for the CEO's who never complain about confederate flags.
