In the Atlanta version, it was a gathering of ardent progressives but also relative newcomers to this world, people slightly surprised that it was the rumpled, white-haired Brooklyn native who speaks of reversing grotesque income inequality, getting billionaires out of politics and the need for political revolution who was best articulating their growing unease with the direction of the country.
If you look at his 12 points, he said, referring to agenda items such as taxing the wealthiest, breaking up big banks and free college tuition, they are more aligned with mainstream Americans than other candidates, particularly if you do away with labels that socialist label.
I think there is a silent majority that maybe dont even know they agree with Bernie Sanders, McClatchey said, and as they began talking about how political stereotypes get in the way of deeper discussions, their attempted conversation was overtaken by an organizer shouting into a microphone.

(51,122 posts)Even went to a Democratic Underground meetup there once, when those were a thing.
It's also in the bluest district in all of the South, so there is no surprise that there would be interest in Bernie or any Democrat.
Additionally, few people in Atlanta are Southern natives. I was a rare native Atlantan.

(7,321 posts)I've been a Socialists leftist since I graduated from high school in 1968.
I'm nearly 65 now, and I can't wait til I can actually cast a vote for a real - self identified Leftist for POTUS for the first time in my life.

(51,122 posts)I wasn't old enough to vote at the time, but I had his bumper sticker on my notebook, which did not go over well at my school in Atlanta.

(7,321 posts)McGovern definitely was a Liberal. But I wouldn't say he was a Socialist. I don't believe he ever identified as a Socialist. If so, I wasn't aware. But he was a real Liberal. And Nixon, was not.
It was my first national election. I almost voted for Nixon. I was in the military, and told my buddies I was going to vote for McGovern. They were horrified! They said McGovern would cut our pay and have us all living under bridges because he hated the military. Anyway, they kept badgering me until I said, "OK, I'll vote for Nixon!" When I got in the voting booth, I actually had my pencil poised over the little oval next to Nixon's name, but I couldn't do it, and I don't know why, even to this day. Something made me change my mind at the last second.

(7,321 posts)Naturally we were not on good terms. so, i totally get the military culture at the time. except for the "subversives" who I connected up with immediately after graduation and they had become hard core activists vets against the war and we were a community you could say. we might remember a certain vet named John Kerry who was a very different person way back then but not so long ago... and here we are.

(5,995 posts)Grew up in an Army town, both parents DA civilians. Dad had done 3 civilian tours and older bro had one tour in the AF. Lottery #301 so wouldn't have to go, but wanted it ended for everyone.
Have worked for the Army for almost 30 yrs and now both kids do too, but never regretted that vote and would support a McGovern again. As long as we keep voting Dem, the moral arc will continue to move our way, some just bend it a bit more than others.
Tend to believe the old yellow dog story:
When a YD Dem was sarcastically chided that he would would vote for the Devil himself if he was on the Dem ticket, paused for a second and admitted "Yeah, but not in the primary."
Have heard versions of this many times, but recall Al Gore telling it on his father during his 2000 run.

(28,120 posts)than labels. The vast majority of repug voters have been brainwashed about these labels. I want true liberals to be elected. That's the only salvation for this country and I'm for doing whatever it takes.
Labels or no labels, principles and good policies must win.
In fact, I bet if you were to put an *R* label on Bernie, the yokels would vote for him over their other candidates. Labels mean so much to them..."I'm a christian" etc. Yelling "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus" all the time, they get away with murder.
Bottom line is I want our candidate, preferably Bernie, to be elected and I don't mind bitting my tongue a few times if that's what it takes.

(184 posts)Sounds like someone I'd vote for. I'd be honored if someone called me that.
I took one of those political surveys and it said line up 96% with Bernie and only 66% with HRC. All Republicans where like single digits. I must also be one of those Socialist, hippie, liberals. Looks like I am in good company.

(700 posts)OK, as a Hillary supporter, I also happen to be one that likes and appreciates Sanders and will gladly support 100% whomever wins the Dem nomination.
But do we really need thread after thread when Bernie is introduced to a crowd at (fill in the blank)? "My niece just found out who Sanders is." "My daughter is now supporting Sanders." "Bernie video goes viral." "Former MSNBC staffer leaves to work for Bernie." "Look at my cute dog wearing a Bernie hat."
I get getting the word out about Sanders and trying your best to promote him, but must everything he does be a new thread? What's next, "Bernie eats a veggie burger and vegetarians everywhere are now supporting him?"
5, 4, 3, 2, 1 - before the hits begin . . .
PS - My cute dog has a Hillary bandana!

(45,084 posts)and I'm gonna post pics of it too. Of course I'll come home and throw up first because as nasty as the food is at Chipolte, Taco Bell is worse. My kids and Grandson know who Bernie is and they are voting for him. Myself? If I was sick of seeing post after post about Hillary I wouldjust trash thread using the keyword Hillary, but I am one of those people who just has to see everything that is going on so I won't do that .
PS- I have a wonderful Papillon that I adore who has me trained oh so well that positively hates other women, I think he wouldn't like Hillary either so he must be a Bernie supporter. He is much too dignified to ever wear a Bernie bandana though!
