my mom picks up her new teeth today - thank you, duers

some time ago, i posted a request to help my mom get a set of dentures and du generously chipped in a large portion of what she needed. well, after months of oral surgery, fittings and consultations, she's off to pick up her new teeth today.

i can't sympathize, but i can empathize with what it must have been like for her to not have teeth and i am thrilled for her today.

du and my mommy.

And Medicare does not cover dental. And a lot of states have cut back on dental coverage for Medicaid patients. That needs to change.

we really need to move to a wholistic view when it comes to healthcare (and that includes "mental" health care).

Stargazer, I know exactly how you feel about this country. I'm sorry to hear you lost your daughter so tragically and unnecessarily. My son went to the emergency room with chest pain and a numb left arm, and the hospital sent him home saying he had a heart murmur and would be just fine. No tests done except an EKG. Six months later he died of a heart attack in his sleep. His autopsy showed he had a heart disease that could have been controlled with medication. He was only 29 and looked to be in perfect health. Left behind a beautiful wife and two small children. So even if you have health insurance, it's no guarantee you'll get good medical care in this country.

Fizzgig, I'm very happy to hear about your mom. Didn't mean to hijack your thread.

experience that my dentures changed my life for the better. Congrats to your mom. Tell her to be proud and to really enjoy flashing those new pearly whites as she's smiles with the satisfaction at her new chompers. I got mine within the last decade so if she has any questions or concerns I'd be happy to share any wisdom I might have gained.

And it will take time. If she needs to use any denture adhesive I definetely recommend Secure... they could put buildings together with this stuff. It also contains no zinc...

http://www.securedenture.com/

I got it a lot cheaper at Amazon. The only thing that stinks about it is that you can only buy it off the internet. Though it says it holds for 12 hours, even with only using half of the stuff on my denture I couldn't get them OUT for about 48 hours. They say right on the tube that if you can't get them out at the end of the day to just sleep with the denture in and try to get them out the next morning.

Going without teeth is horrible and so embarrassing. The lab that did my temporary denture that I was supposed to be able to wear immediately after the last tooth stubs were removed must have gotten switched with someone else's denture... it fit THAT bad in every way. It took the lab a month and a half to finally get me the new temporary denture after going through many more molds and measurements again, and for that time I had no upper teeth at all. I still wear my temporary denture since I was never able to afford to get the permanent one, and with how much the gums shrink I also have to use this stuff called Cushion Grip that I can get at CVS to make it fit.

I'm so happy that your mom will have teeth again! It's going to take quite awhile for her to get used to them though. I had such a horrible gagging problem with mine that my dentist had to shave off a good bit of it off the back yet I still don't think it's enough and still get occassional gagging problems.

I found a ton of really good advice from people on YouTube which is how I found out about Secure and Cushion Grip.

The best advice I can give for your mom though is that they WILL feel like you have a cinderblock in your mouth in the beginning, but though they may never feel "normal" you DO get used to wearing them in time. You just have to relearn how to eat and talk with them in, and eventually you don't even think about that anymore. I still feel like I have trouble making some sounds right, but it's NOTHING like how hard it was to talk when I first got them.

There's nothing so great as never having to worry about and deal with tooth pain or infections again!
