Bernie Sanders is the best 2016 presidential candidate: Letters

Re “Which 2016 presidential candidates are making the best first impressions?” (Question of the Week, June 9):

I hope Sen. Bernie Sanders becomes our next president. I sincerely believe he is the one candidate that can rescue our country from the oppressive corporations and oligarchs that have taken us captive, and restore our democracy to We the People, as planned by our Founding Fathers.

It’s a pity that so many are suspicious of him because he is a socialist. However, his brand of socialism is social democratic, as formulated by the revered Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and not in the least radical by European standards.

And how sad that the corporations that own the mainstream media have convinced common folks that socialism and communism are synonymous. They are not. A socialist democracy protects the men and women on the pavement — the working class.

Sen. Sanders wants to end our perpetual wars that make war profiteers immensely rich by the alchemy of transforming blood into money. Over the years, I’ve read the senator’s speeches, articles and interviews. There is not enough room here to enumerate his progressive vision, which could bring our country out of darkness into light.
