Florida Senate approves tax cut for yacht repairs

Not The Onion!

http://jacksonville.com/breaking-news/2015-06-15/story/florida-legislators-near-deadline-pass-budget-avoid-shut-down

Sen. Dorothy Hukill, a Port Orange Republican and main Senate sponsor, repeatedly called the tax cut bill "broad based." But some legislators questioned some of the smaller tax cuts tucked inside the bill including one that would eliminate sales taxes on boat repairs that cost more than $60,000. Sen. Geraldine Thompson, an Orlando Democrat, said the tax cut benefited the "very wealthy" and "does nothing for the little guy."

Sen. Jack Latvala, a Clearwater Republican who pushed for the boat repair tax cut, said the break would help Florida compete for big boat repair jobs against rival states.

"This provision...is not about saving millionaires money," said Latvala. "It's about getting jobs for people who aren't millionaires."

What "rival states"? Miami is over 400 miles from any other state!

Rhode Island passed a similar law and has become an international destination for boat repair - lots of new companies and well paying blue collar jobs.
