INDIANOLA, Iowa (AP) Bernie Sanders likes to call it "practicing democracy." He doesn't take the stage to a blaring soundtrack. He doesn't have a teleprompter or a phalanx of Secret Service agents surrounding him. But when his Brooklyn accent booms out at a campaign stop in rural Iowa, heads nod along in approval.
"What I'm doing in this campaign is trying to tell the people the truth but a truth which is not heard a whole lot in Washington or discussed a lot in the media," Sanders said recently at a picnic in Iowa's Warren County, south of Des Moines.
"So let me lay it out on the table for you," he said. "You're living in a country today which has more wealth and income inequality than any major industrialized nation on earth."
In a race for the Democratic presidential nomination with Hillary Rodham Clinton, the blunt talk about the economy and the gap between the rich and poor is working for Sanders. The independent senator from Vermont is an unconventional messenger at a time when many politicians test-drive what they want to say in polls and with focus groups.

I'm standing to Bernie's left in my yellow AFSCME shirt at the picnic in Indianola.

(17,651 posts)I'm nearly completely confident about that but the more attractive a candidate he becomes to the masses, the more of a threat he becomes to establishment (and other powers that be).
Watch your back Bernie or have a really good crew do it for you!

ALERTER'S COMMENTS
At best this is CT; at worst, implying that Clinton campaign or DNC would try to kill him.

(14,691 posts)I wasn't thinking of Clinton's fans. It never occurred to me. Somebody protesteth too much. And as for the CT smear, whoever alerted on me could have asked me what I meant instead of just assuming I'm part of the tin hat brigade. But then, I'm a Bernie supporter and they're not.
Thanks for letting me know.

(19,926 posts)WTF does that comment have to do with HRC campaign or the DNC? Really reaching on DU now to make Sanders supporters look bad. The talking point is bad enough. Geez, it will be, um, interesting to see what the next round of tactics brings after all the ones currently in use keep failing.
Hey alerter, your actions are not making your targets look bad. Capiche?

(16,847 posts)There are a lot of people who would like him out of the way, people who are accustomed to getting what they want. If he goes on to the general and wins, it will be a miracle, not because the people voted for him but because we were actually given the choice.

(1,615 posts)bernie's a smart guy, and eloquent. I know he can handle himself.
but, if we get nothing else from his candidacy, at least this is an excellent opportunity for progressive networking.

(135 posts)Clinton had Gore.
Obama has Biden.
Who could Bernie pick that they're even more scared of? Warren, yes, of course, but too obvious. Kshama Sawant comes to mind. She's more socialist than Bernie!

(1,615 posts)I canvassed nh last cycle and I know where my people are.
I don't know abt the rest of the country, but, with a little bit of elbow grease, I can see bernie winning the primaries here.
of course the msm is the last to know, a testiment to how out of touch they are.

..may not allow him on the primary ballot.
This is a real problem. The Democrats force Sanders supporters into a 3rd Party which they really aren't. I want to only vote in the Democratic Primary and am not an Independent
..unless the powers that be in the party give me only pre-determined choices.

(6,592 posts)Doesn't figure out some way to get Bernie on the ballot, it will be glaringly obvious that they have no concern for regular people.

(12,704 posts)This could put the backs up of a lot of people who are on the fence. It also could make Bernie events draw bigger crowds as people would want to know why Dems are afraid of him which is how everyone would interpret such a move.

I love it.
He's not inevitable, but then again, no one is.
A large percentage of Americans are sick of Wall Street excesses and their ability to get away with anything. They are going to look at those in bed with Wall Street with suspicion if not outright disdain.
It is time to rethink our nation's governance, and the same leadership that has favored corporations over people isn't going to work anymore. You can't say you support "small business" when you tax the hell out of small business owners (genuine small business owners) in favor of reducing taxes on conglomerates that structure their organizations so that they fall under the letter of the law as "small business" while being anything but.
Bernie Sanders has spoken up about this. The usual suspects just paint it as a pipe dream and that we all want ponies. They ignore the fact that most of us are tired of shoveling the manure their own rides inflict upon us as a country.
