I am so damn mad this morning

Twenty four hours later I am still mad as hell at what happened in Charleston, SC. I haven't been on in a while to post but I jut wanted to stop by to express my grief and anger. I am a black man of mixed ancestry. I am part black, part white, and part Native American, but guess what the racist see, they only see the black part of me.

All day yesterday on social media, conservative trolls jumped down my grill because I dared to ask when will the gun violence stop and my response was never. Right away the insensitive conservatives started playing their what about it games. Let me tell you, I FREAKING HATE THE WHAT ABOUT IT GAMES THEY PLAY.

I made it clear on several posts that I am not interested in starting a gun debate with you, zero interest. Right away they started saying, its a public forum, I can say anything I want so my response back before blocking them was that yes its a public forum but I have a right not to half to hear your mess too. Some folks started saying I was not being fair.

9 FREAKING PEOPLE IN A CHURCH WAS KILLED AND YOU THINK I AM NOT BEING FAIR?

It got so bad that I had to walk away from the computer yesterday for a few hours to calm down. How are you going to sit there and insult someone over and over again who is clearly grieving for people he has never met but you got no problem defending your precious guns or you got no problems defending your clearly racist issues.

Then there is the killer and I'm not going to mention his name because I have to admit that every time I see the little creeps picture he sends chills down my spine. Why is it that when the shooter is white, cops go out of their way to take them in peacefully, then when you have black folks who shoot, we're shot and killed and called thugs and thrown the books at you.

This is wearing at my soul. I am getting sick of the justification that white people keep throwing at the people like the shooter that got caught while at the same time, we're told that we need to sit down, accept the status quo and shut up. Guess what, I am a religious guy myself. Yes I believe in god. Had I been living in Charleston, there is a good chance I would have been a member of that church and I would have been at that bible study event and most likely I would be dead right now. The thought of someone killing me for my color still sickens me to this hour.

WHEN THE HELL ARE WE GOING TO GROW THE FREAK UP AND START DEALING WITH THIS?

What is it going to take before we wake the hell up and stop treating folks like me like we're the enemy of this country? Is it going to take the death of our President before you all get off your collective butts and help us do something? I am so damn tired of having to see shooting after shooting, I'm disgusted and I'm angry and I have had enough.

This man said that he was going to kill black people. He said that quote we were raping their women and that we got to go. When the hell are you going to stand up democratic underground and do something about these extremist racist white people? I am not going to come back to respond for a while because the more I type this the angrier I get. I'm going to go and cool off and go back to writing and editing my novels. I have got to calm down before something happens to me that I'm going to regret. I'll be checking back to see what your thoughts are on this.

Please forgive me for my rant but I had to get this off my chest.

not whether one needs to get to keep his guns. So-called second amendment rights supporters need to get over it.

I'm very upset about this, too. I don't know how our putative leaders in the GOP can claim this wasn't about racism first, gun control secondly. I do know this wasn't an attack on religion. We do need to talk about racism because we are most definitely not a post racism society.

I have no connection to the events two days ago directly - except to say nine of my fellow Americans were cold bloodedly murdered over their race and I am sad and we as a nation need to deal with racism NOW.

Ironically enough, those "conservatives" who claim it was the doings of a mentally deranged individual are those who would do the least possible for the mentally ill and wouldn't dream of denying access to firearms even to the "deranged" by law.

just said that racism this extreme is mental illness. That is crap. Racism is taught and therefore learned. Mental illness is not a learned behavior. Racism is taught in this country by parents, teachers, ministers, politicians and the media (did I leave anyone out?). Anyone this young man learned his racism from shares responsibility in these murders. Being Christian had nothing to do with their murders except that little racist knew where to find some Black people gathered together.

I wish the media would stop saying his name and showing his photo. Call him the shooter, or whatever but make him anonymous. Fame is a sick attraction for people who do such things.

I can go do some chores now that I got that out.

Every gun needs to be sold with insurance just like a car. If you are the last registered owner of a gun that is used in a crime it is on you. His father should be held responsible for giving him a gun. Especially with his previous arrests. If insurance was mandatory he would not have been able to have a gun. Again and again and again anti firearm people get it wrong, just like your auto insurance fantasy ............ responsible people have automobile insurance,.... morons, criminals and idiots do not, just like your firearm insurance idea, people keep believing that MORE LAWS will make criminals and the insane,...... follow them.

"If insurance was mandatory he would not have been able to have a gun" Jesus Christ........... driving without insurance and drunk driving are not allowed so thank god the law prevents lawbreakers from breaking the law.. right ?

The answer to preventing as much violence as possible lies more in the hands of actual help for the mentally unstable - not just insurance payment reform via the ACA, it lies with jobs and a secure income not MORE lopsided unfair foreign trade policy. The mentally unstable are left to drift thru society with non-professional supervision while on prescription drugs, LARGE numbers of people are skating the edge of mental collapse with a constant looming financial disaster pushing them closer to the edge every day. People have to understand that knee jerk irrational "want" laws will have NO EFFECT on people who ARE NOT FOLLOWING THE LAW in the first place. and ... when there are 300 million people living in a country all it takes is 1/10 of 1% of the population to result in 300,000 incidents. You cant legislate Utopia, there will always be irrational violence, work for the best solution, not a "feel good" but irrelevant fantasy.

Look at every mass shooting, THEY ALL HAVE MENTAL ISSUES that were well known about but went minimally treated and half assed ignored. Yet anti firearm people put blinders on every single time and keep blaming an object not the operator.

agenda driven firearm ignorance offers wonderful rant opportunities, and a real feeling of self importance, but it NEVER addresses the actual roots of the problem, it NEVER EVER changes a damn thing........... at least until the next time a mental unstable person rampages again, ....then "If we could pass one more law, it would have prevented this" is the warm fuzzy blanket people run too.

Fri Jun 19, 2015, 07:45 AM
Jun 2015

I'm a 68 yr white, retired female, and a Buddhist. I own a gun, a pistol, that I use to put sick animals on my llama ranch out of their pain, when they are dieing. I STRONGLY support sensible gun laws that keep guns out of the hands of crazy and violent people.

I just have one question: Why are you on a forum with racist hate-mongers? All they do is disrespect you and make you angry.

We have to channel our anger and rage about racism and gun violence towards the holy ideas of social and economic justice. And we're going to need very much energy to accomplish justice and sensible gun laws, because our government is corrupted by money. Our gov representatives - at all levels - has been bought and paid for by corporations and the monied oligarchs. (Am I telling you something that you don't already know?) They think that the acquisition of money is the highest of all virtues. And the more money you have, the more virtuous you are. They tell all sorts of lies, such as cutting taxes on corporations and the wealthy creates jobs, and that poor people are poor because of defective character and no ambition. They lie about climate change and its causes. Their only jobs program is the war industry. They see people as natural resources to plunder. College students are profit centers. Privitized charter schools and prisons are profit centers. And they want to privitize social security and the sell the post office to UPS. Basically privitize everything that isn't nailed down. To them, money ALWAYS is more important than people.
They are probably sociopaths to boot. Then they fear-monger people about Moslems, gays, immigrants, etc to get their vote.

For a very long time, we have tried to reason with them from economic arguments. But as a Buddhist, I see that the real problem is a moral issue. No, people are more important than the acquisition of wealth. It's an ethical issue. We have to get money out of politics.

Because of that money, the NRA can have an outsized influence to protect guns from sensible regulations;
Because of the money, the media oligopoly that gins up this hate for the Plutocrats and their own ends continues without being broken up as they would have;
Because of this money, we have lost our Representative Democracy, our voice in our politics. Now the Big Donors have the voice, not "We the People!"

I could go on and on, but you get the picture! This is why Bernie over Hillary. She has no plans to stop a system that she so obviously exploits to great effect! This issue far outweighs any reason to vote for anyone else!

As the bible says, the love of money is the root of all evil. And as the Dalai Lama teaches, when money is the highest virtue, when money is the highest motivation for your activities, it leads to corruption. Pope Frances has also been talking about income inequality as a big big sin. My congressman is Jeb Hensarling (TX-05), the chair of the Finance Committee. My district is gerrymandered into a long snake to pick up the east TX bible belt voters and red neck racists. So Jeb has an easy seat to win. Jeb is owned by Wall St, his biggest contributors. You may have noticed that a bunch of big banks just pled guilty in Federal Court to criminal behavior and paid hundreds of millions in fines, but no one went to prison. And hundreds of millions sounds like a lot to you and me, but it's a pittance to the big banks. Do you think I should hold my breath waiting for Jeb to return that money? Fat chance!

Yes, I'll vote for Bernie in the primary; and if Hillary wins, I'll vote for her in the general. Clinton, while not my ideal candidate, is head and shoulders above anything the Republicans are offering. And yes, the Democratic party has also been corrupted by money. That's because the greedy money-lovers are happy to buy the influence of anyone to do their bidding.

I'm going to ask everyone to do a really difficult thing, and that is to have compassion for the shooter. Clearly a young man, whose mind is filled the ignorance of racism and hatred. It is not seeing other people as equal to one's self that leads to arrogance, hatred, and anger. Hatred makes a person very very stupid, do and say really very stupid things - like mass murder. He ranted about black people raping white women and taking over the world. But most of the people he shot were old men and women, who never raped anyone, much less were positioning themselves for world domination. It makes no logical sense. And that is how blind hatred makes someone really really stupid. Hatred and stupidity always results in more suffering.

Ignorance and fear give authority to oppression, ....... selfish motivation reveals the path of deception.

"the inerrant word of God," whoever that is. Ancient people's around the world told creation stories that are equally preposterous. That's because as humans, we just naturally want to know how reality works, how life started, how the world was made, etc etc. As a Buddhist, I have been taught not to proselytyze. We aren't interested in converting you. There's a very long tradition that if you want Buddhist teachings, you have to ask for them. I could point you to a lot of good books, but then you are the one, who has to read them, think deeply on them, and then logically analyze them with an open mind. I think of the Bible as a rich source of material for creative writing.

This country is so fucked up. Really. I am almost without hope that we can
ever cure the racism that has existed from the founding of the country.

I had just been in Charleston the end of May. My husband and I have been going
to their annual Spoleto Festival the last couple of years. So I know exactly where
the church is.

I have had an ongoing argument with my husband about going--because it's in South
Carolina and they are still flying that damn Confederate flag--but we do. Maybe
next year we won't go. I have already signed a petition to remove the flag from
the State Capitol grounds--and added the message that we are thinking about
not coming back next year--but I really doubt that's going to do it. It almost
feels to me like collective action needs to be taken by the citizens of South Carolina
to say, 'no more Confederate flag'. But will that stop the hate felt by white supremacists?
I doubt it.

I do not have any answers. I am deeply disturbed, disgusted, and angry with you.

When we finally start voting out the people, who are spineless before the gun lobby, and have no problem privitizing everything under the sun, we might actually start fixing some problems around here. Don't lose heart! Generate some enthusiasm for voting the assholes out of office.

It seems that people will never learn; and as long as every idiot can get a gun this crap will never stop. I am so sickened by all the hatred and if I were in your situation I would be protesting in the streets. Trust me when I say that not all of us are hate-filled bigots. My heart breaks too.

Do you suppose he'd ever gone to a black church before? I doubt it, but it will
be interesting to find out. Do you suppose he had any black friends? I doubt it.
I wonder if he ever worked with any black co-workers. Probably not. Or had
a black supervisor?

He was carefully taught to hate and even when he was surrounded with love and acceptance,
he couldn't overcome that carefully taught message.

It's sad. Very, very sad.

The best observation to the Confederate battle flag over the capital is that it belongs in a museum. I might add also a historical reenactment the Confederate Battle flag is appropriate. That particular flag over the South Carolina capital needs to be in a museum with a picture of the current and past Governors as a symbol of how the State has perpetuated gross injustice and hatred.

54. Just goes to show that "race" is not a real thing
Fri Jun 19, 2015, 11:30 AM
Jun 2015

"Race" is a concept, not a real thing. "Race" is mostly cultural, not biological. We impute characteristics onto people, based on skin color, hair type, facial features, etc. But do you know who all your ancestors were 10 generations ago? 100 generations ago? I lived in calif for30+ years amidst people from all over the world. Many friends and neighbors were multicultural (and multi-racial), and it was no big deal. In fact, such diversity made life very very interesting and enjoyable. But people in the heartland, who are locked into 1 white culture, don't know anything else. And they are fearful of different looking, different sounding people. Fear is at the heart of racism. Fear that someone will take away privilege. Fear of losing status and MONEY. And the fear leads to anger, which leads to hatred, which leads to stupid thoughts, words, and deeds.

When is reality, there is only 1 race -- the human race. We are all so closely related genetically, that we are all basically cousins. Long ago in our human evolution, some catastrophe nearly made us go extinct. Some scientists think human population got down to about 5K to 10K. That's why our genes are so close.

28. Racism. That is the problem. What to do with it is another. We were close to some of the answers
Fri Jun 19, 2015, 09:43 AM

in the 60s or we thought we were. We made some laws, stopped some of the blatant name calling, integrated some people of color into the mainstream, made some things accessible. There seemed to be hope that this would continue.

So what happened? I think the first thing that happened was the election of Reagan. He stepped up to defend racism in order to win the south. He went to Germany and visited the gravesite of one of Hitler's key advisers. He sent all the right dog whistles to set the progress on racism back decades.

It was also at this time that the Rs started dismantling both the New Deal and LBJ's war on poverty. They used propaganda to insist that the "users and takers" were the black people and though that was not true the white population wanted to believe that. The hatred was allowed to resurface in order to achieve political goals. And is still the main means of getting rid of social programs. Every goal the Rs have seems to have something to do with hating people of color. But I think that is just the lies used to achieve their goals not the actual intent of the Rs. The hatred that has led to such horrible violence is a side effect of their political tools.

Now the teabaggers are a different matter. They are the haters and that is their goal. They think they are fighting to preserve the white culture and in that they have allied with the white supremacist groups that have always been with us keeping the hate simmering underneath the 60s change. This group is dangerous in that they put racism and hatred into action. They are politically strong enough to field candidates who will follow their dictates. Just look at the list of candidates in the R party. Back in the 60s we recognized they were there but we had hoped that eventually they would die out. Unfortunately racism and hatred are learned behaviors.

And another nail in the coffin of the attempt to end racism and hatred is the churches. In the 60s many mainstream churches (at least in the north - don't know about the south) supported the civil rights movement even if it was in a more or less passive way. With the propaganda of the 80s many of these churches turned totally around and became the teachers of hate (see the TV preachers of the time). The spread their hate message as actual biblical truth. And unfortunately the MSM churches who do not agree with them remain silent thus allowing their own members to agree with what ever they want to agree with. Lack of leadership in churches on this issue is the main problem. I applaud Pope Francis for finally standing up.

There are many more institutional changes that helped to bring us to this point. But the thing we need to know is how to turn these haters around.

One thing that we saw in 2008 that could continue to bring the fight back into focus is the election of a black president. Yes his election brought the rats out of hiding but something else happened in that election - people of color voted. And that is the beginning of the end of hate politics.

And this is a perfect time for Christians to approach their church bodies and insist that they stand up for the true message of Christ - love. It can no longer set by and allow the kind of police violence against black men and children like we are seeing now. It can no longer set around and ignore either social or economic justice like we are seeing now. It can no longer set by and watch hate become the message of the church. If it does then it will lose its members because its message is totally useless.

We can also work like DU had done to end the reign of hate mongers on tv and radio. Glenn Beck is not longer mainstream, Limbaugh is finally losing his clout. We need to keep working to end this but unfortunately we are not winning in this fight. We have lost a lot of our progressive sources of information in the last years and this has got to stop. I am not sure what can be done but something has to be done.

IMO these are the some of the things that support racism and hatred and if we do not talk about them we are not going to be able to even control the situation let alone stop it.

and that is inter-racial marriage with multi-racial children. When I lived in Calif, I was surrounded everywhere by multi-cultural families, whose children were very different from one another in skin tone and eye shape, etc, but all equally loved. Kids in school were friends with different looking other kids, and never gave race a thought. I think we are in the last throes of reactionary racists, who see their privileged white status being eroded from both the west and east coasts and, of course, the Rio Grande. Why do you think they fear immigrants so much?

Americans, Blacks, Asians and Latinos. And believe it or not we all get along and we all love each other. And intermarriage has also had a huge effect on our multi-racial community.

But somehow I do not think we can make this into a law. All of our marriages have resulted from the usual reason for marriage.

I realize you were not suggesting a law.

My own uber-right wing, racist, homophobic and idiotic father (who I had run away from home at 16 years of age) had succumbed to Alzheimer's, and I had to leave one of the best job assignments I've ever had in the bay area to go help get him put in a nursing home... against his will.
Between both drives there and back, and in the time I spent in the area, I was sickened daily by the hatemongering bumperstickers, prevalance of right wing media on the radio and public FOX Noize brainwashing stations in an astounding number of local businesses and truckstops enroute. My brother's neighbor's attempted to preach their hate filled sermons to me regarding my rainbow HRC sticker on my car. While I was staying there just for a month, there was a double murder and suicide-by-cop one night at the place I was staying. By this time I was so shook up I had a cardiac event, just my B/P had gone so high it made me dizzy and the doc at the ER put me on some sedatives. I met my idiot neighbor that after his church sessions on sundays saw to it to spread the gospel of white supremacy to whoever he could get to listen to his ranting. Luckily I was well medicated and just listened to this beer swilling idiot with a deaf ear. Those I did encounter of more moderate beliefs truly are afraid of the gun-toting republi-nazi's. So was I.
I was so shaken up not only by the legal process and trickery we had to employ to force my abusive father into lock-down care and away from my mother, all the sickening garbage I saw and heard, literally on a daily basis.... I was never so glad to see the welcome to California sign again. A month later, all my lab tests were normal again, B/P normal and I was no longer shaking with disbelief.
I can only hope these scared stiff moderates in areas like that are getting motivated enough to make it to the polls and beat down the hater's gerrymandering this time. I believe the shellacking that reasonable candidates received this last midterms has emboldened the idiots enough to where they are convinced they can spread their hatred wide and influentially. I pray to any reasonable diety that they fail.
I can't even think of living somewhere else. I just have to stay in the relatively insular bay area.

39. Murderers
Fri Jun 19, 2015, 09:58 AM
Jun 2015

We are a nation of killers, we kill for money, we kill for race reasons, we kill for sex, we kill for drug turf, we kill gays, we kill blacks/whites/aisans/hispanics, indeed we kill for a wide variety of reasons and prejudices on a daily basis here in these United States. We are oddly enough statistically safer than ever before though when it comes to the odds of being murdered when compared to decades past...the 1970s were a time of murders counted in the 20s of thousands instead of the teens of thousands...not sure if that means we are getting better or just older as a society and our murderers are calming down.

We are also a nation with a large amount of racists, a nation where honest discussions of race can't take place without hyperbole and accusation.

I too am amazed that every mass shooting incident becomes a platform for both pro and anti-gun hyperbole. Instead of a difficult and honest discussion about what may or may not be realistic with respect to addressing concerns over this type of violence.

Whether 9 blacks at a bible study, 20 plus elementary school students, half a dozen biker gang members, a few drug dealers, or some random souls on a train we have quite a few killers nestled comfortably in the population at large.

You ask when we will grow up and deal with it, racism is rampant throughout the world. Attend a futbol game in Europe to see some truly disgusting displays. Dani Alves can give first hand accounts, as can Josi Altidore of the intense racism still prevalent throughout Europe in spite of the pretense of many that Europe is somehow more advanced in dealing with issues of race. We must continue to shine the bright light of decency upon those who express this hatred, upon those who would advocate violence.

I hope you feel better after your break, I wish you well in your efforts to come to grips with this ugly situation. I apologize if my remarks are out of order that is not my intent...I believe we pay a great deal of lip service to the issue of race in the US but without any underlying honest attempts at addressing those issues with meaningful policies and meaningful change to educate the next generation(s) to limit the enduring racism in our nation.

You can't fix the racists in the current generation(s) it's the kids, we can only truly change through education our future.

Just my $0.02 YMMV as it most certainly should...

I don't understand the racism except that it is almost idolized by certain people and not just in the south. Something that I haven't heard in any of the news or mentioned in anything I've read is about the idiot Trump's hate speech as he announced he was running for President. He said it about Mexicans but I'm sure he said it to feed into hatred against anyone who isn't as white as him. He said: "I'll stop the Mexicans from coming here. They come here and rape our women and bring drugs and crime with them."

I have to ask, if people who are campaigning to run this country can feel like it's okay to talk that way, what hope is there for us as Americans? I'm an old white woman, I am sure there have been racists in my family's past and maybe there are some now, but for the most part we have been taught to live and let live. I can't begin to understand the fear that you have to live with daily Ranger but what I can do is say I'm sorry, I know that these were 9 wonderful people were killed for nothing but the color of their skin. It makes me sick.

I don't know if this post makes a lot of sense when I read it over but I think it expresses some of what I feel about this.

Trying to talk sense into people who believe violence (racism is violence) is the answer is like trying to reason with a hungry defensive scorpion. It will always rear up and try to sting.

The defensive arrogance of violence defenders know no boundaries or manners. They have NO ability to REASON. It's like trying to reason with a rabid fox.

How are we going to get reasoning through to those who are not only unwilling to learn but who are arrogantly defensive about what they believe? That's the 64 million dollar question. Try reasoning with a child who wants that piece of candy now right before dinner. It's impossible. This is the reasoning capacity of people stuck in insane (racist) beliefs. Just like the child who wants the candy before dinner, we say no as the parent. It's time, as a society we just start telling them NO, because that is the only thing the can understand. No you can't pick on that darker skinned child at the pool, no you can't shoot that teenage boy in the street, no you can't have as many guns as you want, no you can't massacre people in a church, and no you are not allowed to think in hateful ways. We have to tell them NO, because that is all they are able to comprehend.

Whites in authority..politicians, twist themselves sideways to articulate excuses as to why doing nothing is ok. Chris Hays interview with Mark Sanford last night was just typical. Others, the police, prosecutors, are either abusing minorities or standing by doing nothing while their peers commit crimes against humanity.

Main street America whites just seem to stick our collective heads in the sand. We don't seem interested enough to even make these crimes a voting issue.

I guess we just suck. It's just sickening how little humanity we exhibit.
