CNN reporting that Roof bought the gun himself.

"He himself bought the .45-caliber handgun used in the shooting last April at a Charleston gun store, according to the two officials. Earlier, a senior law enforcement official had indicated that Roof's father bought him a Glock firearm for his birthday."

It should be easy enough to verify one way or another, as I'm sure it will be.

If all guns were electronically and publicly tracked, we could find out these details in seconds.

If you want the right to bear arms, you should be willing to be well regulated.

6. It sounds like they're trying to determine how he got the gun.

Roof's roommate is saying the same thing.

"At first Mr. Meek said he did not take Mr. Roof seriously. But he became worried enough that several weeks ago he took away and hid Mr. Roof’s .45-caliber handgun, which Mr. Roof had bought with money given to him by his parents for his 21st birthday. But at the urging of his girlfriend, Mr. Meek returned the weapon because he was on probation and did not want to get into trouble."

I have read here over and over how young people's reasoning/decision making skills are still very immature in their early 20's.

I don't know if that's true, but many here seem to think so.

I was really wondering how B2G - who never saw a position held by a majority of black DUers that she didn't instantly decided to take a giant shit upon - was going to play this Charleston thing. I guess you're going with "snarky defense of the shooter, with winking suggestions of hypocrisy."

Wouldn't expect any less.

How did he pass the NICS background check with a pending felony on his record? He should've been flagged as a prohibited person.

How many other "prohibited persons" have slipped through the cracks?

Where did NICS fail?

if he knew that his son was under a felony indictment. It wouldn't matter whether the gun was used in a crime or not.

Roof had been arrested on drug charges. Since apparently he'd been indicted, then he was disqualified from possessing firearms, by federal law (which prohibits convicted felons and those under indictment for felony crimes from possessing weapons). But to the best of my knowledge, indictments aren't part of the database, along with various other disqualifying conditions. This needs to change.
