"Bleak House"

These Upstate South Carolina people revel in their hate, ignorance, stupidity, and racism. William Faulkner hit this type of hate dead on in Absalom, Absalom!:

"When you have plenty of good strong hating you don't need hope because the hating will be enough to nourish you." - William Faulkner

Wow. I've never heard those words before, but so very true. I've known people like that, their entire existence revolves around hate.

an incredible crime story about southern racism and Jim Crow in a small Mississippi town. The portrayal of the black man faced with murder by Juano Hernandez was very powerful. I had never heard of book or movie which Faulkner assisted in the script and production.

While I appreciate this visual from Mr. Luckovich -- and the balls of AJC to run it -- I must wonder how soon it will fade from our collective consciousness.

Just like all the Facebook posts, imploring me to like and share their virtual pleas for South Carolina state government to remove that blood-soaked rag from the flag pole on state capitol grounds. Clearly, their governor and much of their legislature are owned by the conservative overlords and they're not about to risk the lash of their whip at the next election.

What I'd like to see is a call to hit them where it really hurts: boycott the tourism business in the Palmetto State. Especially in places like Hilton Head Island, Myrtle Beach and other popular destinations. Let's focus their Chamber-of-Commerce-driven attention on how the rest of the country have had quite enough of that treasonous tradition (thanks, Rude Pundit for framing that discussion so succinctly!).

I don't suggest penalizing the minority-owned businesses in Charleston and elsewhere, but until the tourism corporations feel a pinch, this all seems so very futile. If anyone can provide the names, addresses, phone numbers and websites of African American-owned hospitality businesses in South Carolina, let's let our purchasing power speak above the ephemeral cloud that will soon fade away.

And while I'm on a soap box: I've seen quite enough of the despicable face of the assassin/terrorist who perpetrated this massacre. This is the kind of attention that is craved not only by this misbegotten animal, but also by potential wannabes who see this as a venue to achieve international attention while butchering innocents. Rather, let's see more about those whose lives were brutally ended. and how we can prevent recurrence.
