I really thought that this incident was so obviously and clearly racist

that everyone would have to admit it, and no one would even try to deny it for fear of looking like an idiot.

A was naive.

Jeb Bush, FOX, I even thought they would have to admit it in this case.

And even here at DU there are people who think this wasn't about racism.

I have no optimism about our society's ability to eliminate racism when people so willfully deny racism in so obvious a racist crime. This is depressing.

2. They're desperately trying to hold the Nixon "southern strategy" together

by reassuring bigots they're still not only welcome in the party, they'll be coddled and catered to as long as they stop just short of killing other people. And even if they do kill, they'll be called anything but what they are, bigots.

Can't have anybody seeing clearly what that party is all about, can we?

No one appears to want to take leadership in that state to even get rid of that flag. People are tip-toeing around so as not to offend racists.

denying this heinous act as racism... I feel kind of numbed/stunned.

I have no idea what to make of it.

You have a self ADMITTED RACIST murdering black people because he hates blacks, yet some here deny the murderer's own words... as I said, it's rather stunning.

7. trying to hold on to that privilege

by any means necessary. Denial of racism is one effort to hold on to that privilege, if they deny racism is a problem then it does not exist and they do not have to deal with it, only those POC and we don't matter to the bush's, foxes, nikkis and you're right even some on here deny, to hold on to that privileged life...... no doubt.

even among good liberal people I know. Particularly annoying to me personally - and apologies to anyone who holds this view - are the people who want to blame this act on pharmaceuticals. I'm just not buying it. This guy spent a lot of time cultivating his deep racism and he planned and carried out this crime in a precise and methodical way. Drugs had nothing to do with it.

the only way to not agree with the deniers and those who are trying to make it something else to make themselves less guilty of their own bigotry is to firmly state: clearly a hate crime and racist.

they say it's not racist and we're supposed to believe them. White shooter says he's there to kill black people and why and does it: well, we can't believe that was really what it was about, I guess we'll never know why.
