Kansas - Brownback Signs Law That Allows Pharmacists to Guess if Women Are Having an Abortion,

Refuse Them Service

See >>> http://www.alternet.org/newsandviews/article/929454/brownback_signs_law_that_allows_pharmacists_to_guess_if_women_are_having_an_abortion%2C_refuse_them_service/#paragraph3

With the signing of a new expanded conscience clause bill in Kansas, Republican Governor Sam Brownback has now legally blessed a virtually open-ended number of situations in which "religious" workers can refuse to assist women under the guise that they believe they "may be" terminating a pregnancy.

Idaho already had a case of a pharmacist who refused to fill a perscription for a woman who needed drugs to stop bleeding, believing that the woman may have had an abortion which caused her blood loss, and the pharmacist received no punishment for the action. How long will it take for that to become the rule, rather than the exception, as the Kansas law goes into effect?

I wish we had stronger federal (Constitutional) human rights laws to protect women, gays and minorities, so that no state could pass such laws as this--ever. They would have to be clearly written so no idiot could mistake the interpretation, right?!

15. This is very bad too, Kansas Preservation of Religious Freedom Act
Tue May 15, 2012, 05:58 PM
May 2012

This act should be unconstitutional under the US constitution, but Kansas is trying to pass it, as I understand it's temporarily shelved. And they wonder why people leave Kansas, and/or will not go there for work ... believe me, KS is a place to leave!

"Kansas Preservation of Religious Freedom Act"

At first glance, the Kansas Preservation of Religious Freedom Act looks very much like the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) and state RFRA laws that exist in at least 16 states. Under the Kansas act, any law that imposes a substantial burden on a religious practice is subject to strict scrutiny. Unless the challenged law advances a compelling government interest in a narrowly tailored way, the religious objector is exempt from that law.

A closer inspection, however, reveals that the impetus behind the Kansas act is not protecting religious rights across the board, but protecting the right of certain religious groups to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. In particular, the Kansas act creates a defense to municipal anti-discrimination ordinances. Sparking the Kansas act was the city of Lawrence's expansive anti-discrimination protection: in Lawrence, discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in housing, employment and places of public accommodation is illegal. According to its sponsor in the state House of Representatives, the Kansas act would, for example, provide a legal defense to a religious landlord who refused to rent to a same-sex couple.

a real democracy in action, isn't it ... somehow they think crap like this is making Kansas a destination for people wanting jobs and corporations to move here. That, along with the plan for no income tax and no corporate tax.

The state of KS I read one place will be in debt something like two billion dollars if this goes forward. I just can't imagine a young bright person with it leaving the coasts to make Kansas their dream come true. One democratic legislature got up in one meeting and said something to the affect that if they keep this up they'll be scaring everyone from Kansas.

in certain parts of the country if this keeps up. That is just what they want--yeah--they want us all to run from them.

Once predatory types go on a feeding frenzy they can't stop themselves, it is up to us to stop them. ALL stick together and stop acting like prey.

I think the adults need to take over, Occupy everywhere--not run away from them--we all need to have each other's backs and stick together. I know this is easier to say than to do, but this is exactly what has to happen--bullies are the ones that need to be controlled--not everybody else, right?

married and raise lots of babies. Seriously. This KS gov. is completely invasive now into telling people how to run their lives and what is legal that should be personal private decisions. One of the problems in KS is I guess a lot of people want what he's doing. The republican preference and more and more conservative authoritarianism seems to be winning across Kansas, even in the once moderate areas in eastern Kansas as far as I know.

They vote these controlling authoritative people in, some of them over and over. As some have said, his goal is barefoot uneducated women all over Kansas just having kids. The brain drain is already going on here, the younger generation has been fleeing Kansas for some years now. One can surely see why. We're getting out of here too as soon as we can.

I've met a number of people in Kansas proud of the fact they've never left the state, even on a vacation or anything. Now all Kansans aren't like that, of course. Someone once told me that in parts of Kansas they don't even put up democratic challengers for office. Enough people must love people like Brownback, as he was elected senator over and over again, and then as soon as he ran for governor he was elected.

I work at a college, and they are so blissfully unaware of what is going on, it makes me furious. I don't understand why young women are very happily becoming second class citizens again.
