IOKIYR: Bristol Palin is pregnant, admits she’s a ‘disappointment’ to her familyKR:

Bristol Palin no longer has a ring on her finger, but she now has a bun in the oven.
A month after splitting from fiancé Dakota Meyer, the single mother of one announced she’s pregnant and admitted her news would be “a huge disappointment to my family, to my close friends, and to many of you.”
“I wanted you guys to be the first to know that I am pregnant,” the conservative 24-year-old wrote on her blog Thursday. “Honestly, I’ve been trying my hardest to keep my chin up on this one. At the end of the day there’s nothing I can’t do with God by my side, and I know I am fully capable of handling anything that is put in front of me with dignity and grace.”
Sarah Palin’s daughter was a teenager when she welcomed her first child, now 6-year-old son Tripp, with high school sweetheart Levi Johnston during her mom’s bid for vice president alongside John McCain. The two broke off their engagement before walking down the aisle.

Teen Mom Bristol Palin: the New Face of Abstinence

Teen mom Bristol Palin said in an interview on "Good Morning America" that she will campaign for abstinence in hopes of sparing others the trouble of an unplanned pregnancy.

I really don't. So what. No family is perfect.

There's this idea that Republican hypocrisy is especially worse, because they run on "family values." Well, what does that mean? Do we cede good behavior to people who claim it? Does that mean Democrats are fine with cheating or people in the closet or what have you?

Who cares.

Maybe this is informed by my being gay. "A republican is gay somewhere!" They are. And probably in pain and confused and a big ole mess. And so is probably Bristol. She's a big fat mess and says stupid things and is the daughter of a nincompoop.

So? We all are, to some extent. Each of us says things that, if examined, would probably get smacked around a ton in light of behavior that we keep hidden.

I see no reason to bother about her with a scrutiny we would not want for ourselves.

A very perceptive question. I would like to see it asked every time some lazy candidate urps out that phrase. As you note, it isn't a magic talisman. So what does it mean, to say that someone running for office believes in "family values"? I'd really like to see the journalists covering these candidates ask them what they mean by it. Because I don't think it means anything, really.

16. It's a phantom phrase
Thu Jun 25, 2015, 06:14 PM
Jun 2015

It means a heterosexual couple with kids who never cheat on their spouse ever.

Which most politicians don't even seem to manage half the time.

And given the vast quantities of revealed hypocrisy over time, it's a phrase that should be retired. I think it has been for the most part. Republicans totally wrecked it all by themselves (What's up, Speaker Hastert?!). I cannot imagine any Republican using that phrase as a national admonition with a straight face in 2016. But one never knows. They may yet surprise.

But even so. Bristol. She's not running for office. Who cares. I don't hold politicians responsible for their kids. And I especially don't hold kids responsible for their politician parents. Should I be put out that Chelsea Clinton is married to a hedge fund manager who isn't exactly on the up and up? Nope. Never mentioned it before this post. Not going to mention it again.

Politicians' kids are going to do outrageously stupid things. Why should I derive satisfaction from it?

that is a problem. The whole point of democracies is that no man, or woman, is above or beneath the law. She is on the record as supporting people having to live by her abstinence only code. She has decidedly not been doing that (not only once but twice now). It would be like finding out the Teddy Kennedy was running sweat shops in his spare time, or that Bernie was running a billion dollar super pac, or that Sherrod Brown was crossing picket lines.

And let's not invoke Teddy Kennedy. With women, especially, the man had a severely checkered past. He was awesome in many ways, but his personal life was a mess.

This airhead did just that and raked in a nice pile of cash for her hypocrisy. If she had never done that I wouldn't say a word about her, Palin family or not.

But look at, say, Kennedy's record on women's rights. He was a big proponent. He was awesome on them.

He was also a womanizer to the highest degree.

If Bristol were in office, I'd care. However, she has no power to affect anyone at all. I cannot imagine anyone anywhere sitting at their computer thinking, "What does Bristol Palin think on this issue, for her advice is sound and wise."

There's a saying on our side. One should always "punch up".

Smacking Bristol around feels very downward in trajectory to me.

Yes, she has money, but I don't wish that trainwreck on anyone. She's going to have some long nights and a lot of days spent crying. She doesn't need this 36 year-old guy adding his two cents.

I don't remember where, but somewhere a long time ago I read the comment that "All families are dysfunctional, some are more dysfunctional than others."

I feel sorry for her. She never had much of a mother herself. A Narcissist can never be a good mother. There isn't any room for a child in that relationship. Maybe Todd tried, who knows. I think she probably was on her own emotionally her entire life. She is a sad young woman whose behavior is very typical of a person with her upbringing.

Regardless of the terrible and stupid things she has said, I don't think she is a bad person.

I raised three kids pretty much by myself, without a decent role model, and it's not easy.

I just wish she would stop trying to be some sort of spokesperson for family values, fade away into obscurity, and work on being a good mother so she can raise decent, loving human beings, because this world could sure use a few more of that and a few less like her family.

She had to hear it from someone in her family. If my daughter were ever to get pregnant, I would never tell her she was a disappointment to her family, and I wouldn't allow anyone else to do so either.

As for her family, if they had any shame they would be disappointed in themselves for being grifting, right-wing nuts, and disappointed in Governor Palin for quitting halfway through her term.

How do you think your kid is going to feel to read that one day. Mommy was upset she got knocked up again with you and didn't really want you. Probably would have had an abortion if her family wasn't so high profile against it.
