The Beautiful Closing Paragraph of Justice Kennedys Gay Marriage Ruling
By Jordan Weissmann
Justice Anthony Kennedy, who authored todays ruling legalizing same-sex marriage throughout the United States, is sometimes made fun of for his notoriously purple prose. (17,205 posts)I find the sentence "The Constitution grants them that right" to be repellant. I also don't agree that the plaintiffs are "asking" for anything. But hey, as long as the right is upheld.

(17,205 posts)What is granted may be withheld at pleasure. What is inherent can only be denied (or acknowledged, of course). At any rate, what is important now is that everyone's right to marry is acknowledged. Possibly this will affect acknowledgement of some other rights.
