so it's not quite accurate to contrast it with "the government." I suspect the Supremes are able to keep their secrets because it does not employ vast numbers of people, and its confidential work is not circulated on the Internet before an opinion is published. Apples and oranges...

Of course I know they are a branch of gov't. Your reasons for the secrecy are right. But there is also a discipline that other branches don't have. And of course, no hacking incidents.

With postponing releasing some decisions until today - twice on June 26, the Supreme Court has ruled favorably for gay rights - once in the 90s against a Texas law that outlawed same gender sex and then with DOMA. Ruth probably thought it would be nice date for a hat trick.
