Confederate flag hoisted, then lowered in Petaluma (xpost from California group)

http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Confederate-flag-hoisted-then-lowered-in-Petaluma-6349690.php

With the national controversy over hoisting the Confederate flag at a boiling point following the Charleston, S.C., shooting that left nine black parishioners dead, a Petaluma man decided this week to defend it — briefly — by raising it over his lawn.

Travis Kilbourne, 33, flew the flag over the house he rents on Lassen Drive for two days before replacing it with a national flag Thursday morning. He said he took it down because his goal was just to jump-start a conversation on free speech.

“I do not condone racism in any form — I think it is not conducive to America,” said Kilbourne, a Civil War reenactor who role-plays as a Union soldier. “I do believe in the First Amendment. I think it’s a cornerstone to who we are, and that’s why I did what I did.”

Kilbourne said he did not know the South Carolina shooter aligned himself with the Confederate flag.

I kind of agree with his right to fly it on his private property. Cleita Jun 2015 #1

If he wants all his neighbors and the rest of the world to know he's an asshole racist, it's his right. But that does not mean it has any place on public building, public land or places that the public goes to like shopping malls and other private places open to the public.

My son in law flies the American flag and the Irish flag on his property. Of course the Irish flag is a flag of victory of the Irish over the British. Why anyone wants to fly a flag of defeat, which the rebel flag is, makes no sense to me.

I've known some Civil War reenactors. Why they want to do it is beyond me, but it's a social thing. The wives dress up in the bell shaped skirts and they have a big pretend day where they put themselves into those roles like actors. Even though both sides are supposed to be enemies, they are in fact all friends and know each other. So my guess is that some of his buddies on the Confederate side convinced him their flag was a patriotic one for them. But I really don't know.

But there are always consequences to inappropriate decisions. He was getting enough negative feedback that he tried to explain his inexcusable actions by posting a sign under his flag to explain his intentions, “Americans fought and died under this flag," but he got it all wrong. Traitors who seceded from the US died under the Confederate flag, not Americans.
