McLennan County (Texas) begins issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples

Jessica Preciado, 32, and her fiancée, 31-year-old Jaclyn Owens, became the third same-sex couple to apply for a marriage license at the McLennan County Clerk's Office after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Friday morning that same-sex couples could legally marry in all 50 states.

The office began issuing the licenses after McLennan County Clerk Andy Harwell consulted with Mike Dixon, an attorney for the county, about the landmark ruling.

Preciado and Owens said they heard about the ruling while at a doctor's office. Owens is pregnant with a girl, she said, smiling. Their baby is due in September, and all three will have Preciado's last name.

Owens said they were both emotional when they realized what had happened. They decided to drive straight to the county clerk's office, arriving just after 11 a.m., Preciado said.

Same-sex couples in Texas begin obtaining marriage licenses from county clerks.

In Travis County, Texas, Gena Dawson and Charlotte Rutherford were the first same-sex couple in the state to receive a marriage license, within two hours of the ruling.
