Supreme Court strikes down bans on same-sex marriage
BEAUMONT - The U.S. Supreme Court Friday made marriage for same-sex couples legal nationwide. But there are still some issues that will have to be worked out before the first couples are issued a license in southeast Texas.

12News spoke with Jefferson County Clerk Carolyn Guidry shortly after the Supreme Court decision was made. She said the county is not yet processing marriage permits because she cannot legally change the forms which state male and female. She said she is awaiting a decision by the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office.

Guidry said she has also contacted the Department of Vital Statistics as well.

"By seeking legal advice from the District Attorney's office we are seeking to ensure any license we issue is unassailable," said Guidry.

12News spoke with Jefferson County District Attorney Bob Wortham who said the county has not yet had an opportunity to review the opinion. He said when they do, they will consult with the other elected officials at the state and county levels on how to proceed in a timely and legal way.

In Orange County 12News spoke with Deputy County Clerk Stacy Wells. She said that Orange County has the same issue with the state-issued form.

“We cannot alter it,” she said.

"We are waiting on the state to issue the form. We have also contacted the DA as to what we need to do."

Wells said as of 10 a.m. the county has only had one inquiry about obtaining a license.

What a bunch of wusses. When was the last time a county clerk anywhere was prosecuted for altering a damn form?

You cross it out, correct it and initial it. Any questions?

If anybody in the aforementioned states are refused a license immediately, they should file an abuse of power complaint against the state officials who have issued orders to not comply with the SCOTUS ruling. These complaints should be filed with the US Attorney for their districts. Abuse of power is a federal felony.

(From yesterday)

Dallas County is ready for loving couples and large crowds, should the U.S. Supreme Court sanction same-sex marriage.
The county records office will extend its hours, and employees there will work overtime to issue marriage licenses. Judges will be available to marry couples. Security will be increased, should the court’s ruling inspire protests or just cause congestion in and around county buildings.

Texas law neither permits nor recognizes same-sex marriage, but Dallas County Clerk John Warren, a Democrat, said he would take his cue from the nation’s highest court. Should the Supreme Court strike down state prohibitions against gay marriage, Warren said, the county could start issuing licenses to gay and lesbian couples within an hour or two.

But there are a lot of yahoos in this state including the governor who are kicking and screaming.

Thank you for chiming in.

A lot of the anti-south posters on here think that Texas is some small wee state lol!

I live in NC and in SC, and the states are large and diverse.

But many ignorant Duers here think that the south is like some sort of Wal-Mart they can boycott.

Too funny.

parties have 25 days to file for reconsideration. So the order has yet officially take effect, so clerks who want dicks about it can drag it out another 3 weeks
