Nearly a decade ago, Dale Earnhardt Jr. spoke out against the Confederate flag in a somewhat wishy-washy way, but now that NASCAR is supporting South Carolina in its decision to remove the flag from its Statehouse grounds, Earnhardt is clarifying his stance further. "I think it's offensive to an entire race," Earnhardt told reporters Friday at Sonoma Raceway. "It belongs in the history books and that's about it" ... Jeff Gordon wasn't quite as deliberate in his message when asked Friday, but said he supports NASCAR's decision ... "To me Im in support of what they are doing. Its a delicate balance," Gordon said. "We race all over, but the South is an area where we have a lot of fans. Everyone has different opinions and expression of that. I support NASCAR and the stance that they are taking ...

Maybe it's actually offensive to everyone who opposes slavery and has more than two or three brain cells, but we should all be happy to see more folk stumbling towards the light

(16,286 posts)In 2004, he took his whole crew to see Fahrenheit 9/11 and said everyone should go see it. That was some brave out-of-the-closet shit for a Nascar driver to say in 2004.

(17,751 posts)In an interview right before the day late race start Dale was asked what he and his crew did the night before to take their minds off of the race. Dale looked straight into the camera and said that he took his crew to see Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9-11, and that its a movie that all Americans should see.
Keep in mind that, despite the GOP's attempts to rebrand NASCAR as GOP, its roots are in union auto workers. UAW, AFL-CIO, are the base of NASCAR.

(3,655 posts)His dad and grandfather grew up poor. They struggled to win against the big money and finally made it. His father lost two wives to divorce due to years of struggling to make it. Dale senior never gave up on his dream and resisted taking a job in the textile mills.
