Judge Dennise Garcia sent the tweet below out yesterday morning after THE decision
@kdgarcia
Then, the first marriage she performed, the first same sex wedding in Dallas County, Texas, was between two members of her church, Jack Evans, 85, and George Harris, 82, together for 54 years.
Two beautiful, brave souls, finally united, legally, in marriage.
54 years together. Imagine how much they faced, the bigotry, the hate, the adversity in 1961 Dallas County, Texas.
After waiving the 72 hour waiting period,
I just broke down and bawled when I heard it. There will be more tears. Shes the love of my life. My sun and my moon and my best friend. Weve traveled together for 22 years," said Johnson. And to now be able to take that step and make it official, legally. No more being turned away from hospitals and feeling humiliated when I needed to care for her which has happened to me. This means a whole lot.
Much more at link, including video of some of these unions taking place. Such a joyful day. We are alive to witness one of the most beautiful decisions in US history.

Here's an argument to use against the religious zealots that advocate for breaking the law and refusing to marry same sex couples
1 Peter 2:13-17New International Version (NIV)
13 Submit yourselves for the Lords sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, 14 or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. 15 For it is Gods will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.16 Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as Gods slaves. 17 Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.
Just in case you hadn't noticed, I'm a little happy and excited about this decision.

Must be something in the air. Something has been in my eyes since 9:02am yesterday

(70,567 posts)seeing that old coulpe get married does my heart good along w/the judge's
skipping her vacation to go marry people all day long is nice too.
I wonder who the republicans will find to hate on now? .... my money is on the
Muslims and that Obama can't stop ISIS.
marym625
(17,997 posts)But I agree that Muslims are probably next. Although I think it might be the elderly.
Yes, it's heartwarming and inspiring that it took 54 years and they never gave up!
Botany
(70,567 posts).... think about brown and black people in private. However the demographics*
are brutal to them now and in the future. A huge % of people under 30 support
"the gays" and see hating on them as sign #1 for being an asshole. As for the
haters over the next 20 years many will have to take their "dirt naps."
BTW for having Gay and Lesbian neighbors for years I never got why anybody
would fall for the bull shit lie about the threat from the gays.
BTW part 2 ..... I have come to think that many of the people who are haters
tend to have their own issues too.
* that is why they have cheat, flip votes, gerrymander districts, and have a
dirty media push their talking points ..... how many times do they have to have
Lindsey Graham or John McCain on those useless Sunday Morning shows?
marym625
(17,997 posts)Dramatically with this ruling. People who have been too afraid will start coming out.
Yes, they'll have a harder time being bigots in public, thankfully. But, unfortunately, it won't stop many. I am ready for an increase in attacks for a while too.
But we're getting there!
Botany
(70,567 posts).... in the population should be a constant that is governed by genetics.
And yes we might have a spike in attacks and vile speech on the GLBT
community now just like all the bigots came out after Obama was elected
in 2008.
BTW how could anybody hate on my marym625? And if they do I would like
a word or two w/them.
I am going to our 40 year plus local Comfest today and it should be awesome ....
something I learned a long time ago .... gays know how to party.

(17,997 posts)How sweet! Well, here on DU you would have to talk with more than a few. But that's OK. It's not my problem, it's their's.
I honestly believe that all the studies are wrong. Because they really don't have a genetics, yet, nailed down on this and that I believe there are some people that just haven't been completely truthful in studies, with friends and family and even with themselves. I believe that the actual percentage is closer to 20% Especially when you factor in bi and pan.
I hope you have a beautiful, wonderful time!
And yes, we do know how to party!

(6,409 posts)Any county official who declines to issue a marriage license should face discipline. Our public servants have a duty to uphold the law and perform their jobs in the public interest. If they want to practice religion, they should quit their county clerk jobs and become full time ministers.

I am thrilled for you marym and all the people this will directly impact. I understand
there is more to forge against bigotry against gay people..but it is good to celebrate
too. I like the way this judge is celebrating it.
