Even After Supreme Court Ruling, These States Are Still Resisting Same-Sex Marriage

http://thinkprogress.org/lgbt/2015/06/27/3674802/states-resisting-same-sex-marriage/

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that marriage equality is a constitutionally protected right on Friday, but some state officials were quick to resist the decision, either by delaying enforcement of the ruling or drafting legislation that would end state agencies’ involvement in issuing marriage licenses.

(snip)
Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant (R), House Speaker Philip Gunn (R) and State House Judiciary Chairman Andy Gipson (R) are considering all of their options to prevent same sex marriage licenses from being issued. Gipson suggested the state stop issuing marriage licenses, a path other states are considering taking after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

In Tennessee: Two state legislators, State Rep. Andy Holt (R) and State Rep. Bryan Terry (R), are drafting legislation that would “protect all religious clergy from performing same sex marriages, as well as, providing legal protection from being forced to perform same sex marriages on church property.”

(snip)
A Utah lawmaker has drafted legislation that would end the state’s issuance of marriage licenses, according to a Salt Lake City television station, Fox 13, which confirmed the story through another legislator. The sponsor of the legislation and its exact language are unknown because it is “protected legislation” and therefore not yet public knowledge.

It's futile, but they don't realize that they're drowning in the air.

It's over, Teabaggers. Done. Finished. You lost. Move on.

7. How does a moratorium on CIVIL secular marriage licenses fix their religious paranoia?

If their pastors don't want to perform marriages between couples they don't approve no one will force them to do it despite their fears. Preventing couples from forming a legal bond is insane and I agree with you - how is it legal?

Of course, now with the SCOTUS decision they cannot refuse to accept a marriage made in another state - no matter who it involves. So all they are doing is to cost their state money and force their citizens to spend money going to other places to be married.

perform marriage services.

How far will some people go to just deny rights and benefits to others that they themselves already have?

since Day One.

I clerked for a judge who must have married 30-35 couples in the 20 months I worked for him.

My own parents were married by a judge.

Marriage is covered by CIVIL law and the sad little fundy ministers don't have to marry teh geh folks. As if any self respecting gay couple would want to be married by a fundy dunce.

Right, because members of the clergy are always required to perform any wedding, or when any church was forced to allow its property to be used for a wedding (provided they have not chosen to make it available as publicly available rental property).

I'm pretty sure that the Catholic church (just as an example) would have been up in arms if it had been told that it could not restrict marriage to members of the Catholic faith. As would a synagogue that was told it had to act as a wedding chapel and serve all who showed up, officiant in hand, to get married on their property.

Never happened. Never going to happen.

Well, I guess it's their choice. Kind of like rejecting Medicaid expansion. Really dumb but they are really dumb.

...all those who wish to get married c'mon up to Michigan!!! We have great places to get married and have a honeymoon!!! Get married on the sunset shores of Lake Michigan, for example.

Even our idiot Guv Snyder was smart enough to say "case closed" and directed all state departments to immediately comply with the ruling.
