Spain diphtheria update: 1st case in 30 years dies

http://outbreaknewstoday.com/spain-diphtheria-update-1st-case-in-30-years-dies-29806/

"n an update to a report at the beginning of June, Spanish National Radio reports (computer translated) the 6-year-old boy from Olot with diphtheria admitted to the Hospital Vall d’Hebron in Barcelona died Saturday.

The child, whose parents refused to vaccinate, has been admitted since May 30 in intensive care.

...

According to the Minister of Health of the Generalitat, Boi Ruiz, the child’s death from diphtheria will hopefully serve for the emergence of a “collective reflection” on the need for the population to be vaccinated.

Ruiz said that the main cause of death was diphtheria, and that the child would not have fallen ill if she had been vaccinated."

There is no evidence that they were not anti-vaxers. HuckleB Jun 2015 #2

Yup. Several people in the family were infected. HuckleB Jun 2015 #4
That makes sense. Thanks. postulater Jun 2015 #5
I think the rest were older, but I don't know about their vaccine status. HuckleB Jun 2015 #6

means being thrown out of work and that means your social security isn't being paid and all medical expenses are out of pocket and that means the kids don't get their shots.

Expect to see a lot more of this in PIIGS countries as the troika tighten the screws on all of them.

The funny part is that Iceland showed them the way out of this years ago. Rich men are terrified of it.

ETA: Stories are saying this kid's parents were antivaxers. I'm taking that with a pound of salt.

And, apparently, they said they felt deceived by the anti-vaccine movement.

How did this kid contract it?

Someone around him must have been infected.

[he? she? can't tell from the excerpt. one place says boy, another says 'she'.]

So either they were immune due to the vaccine, or if they had not been vaccinated then they were naturally immune enough to not die.
