If you assume that is prima facie proof of insanity, then you are saying about 40%+ of the nation is functionally insane.

I'm not willing to extend the religious bigots that cover. They are almost all perfectly rational in every other area of their lives. It's not neurochemistry or frazzled synapses that make them act so wildly in religiously motivated ways. It's not a disease that can be treeated or controlled like schizophrenia or depression. Sure there are a few theocratic folks who have genuine mental illness, but no more than the general population I'd warrant and certainly not close to half of the country which is generally the right number for those who hold extremely irrational religious views such as young earth creationism, biblical inerrancy etc.

So no they are not, like mentally ill folks, victims of disordered biology or chemistry. They are otherwise normal functional mentally well people who are wilfully choosing to partition off one section of their life and decision making from the use of reason, science and logic, and deciding that that irrational part of them is the override switch for social opinions. When fundamentalists start driving 100mph in crowded streets or thinking they can fly on tall roofs, things that could cause themselves pain and risk, then I'll believe they may be insane. When they live perfectly rationally other than deciding who to hate based on a smarmy grifter in a pulpit's ramblings, it's just religion. Only religion.
