Donald Trump: Only rich people should be allowed to play golf (Not the Onion)

If people had any doubts before this should seal it for them....

http://www.nj.com/golf/index.ssf/2015/07/donald_trump_says_only_rich_pe.html

"I think I'm in a minority, but I feel differently about golf. I feel golf should be an aspirational game, something people aspire to. People should come to golf, golf shouldn't come to them." ...
"Golf should be something beautiful, elegant, something people aspire to play eventually." ...
"It may be elitist, and perhaps that's what golf needs. Let golf be elitist. When I say 'aspire,' that's a positive word. Let people work hard and aspire to some day be able to play golf. To afford to play it. They're trying to teach golf to people who will never be able to really play it. They're trying too hard. Because of the expense of playing, and the land needed, golf is never going to be basketball, where all you need is a court.

"All these great athletes, you know what they do when they retire? They do nothing but play golf. Basketball players, hockey players, football players, all they want to do is golf.

"Let it be aspirational instead of bringing it down by trying to get players to do it when they're 15 years old and they're also learning other sports. I think it's very damaging to the game."

Imagine him going talking to Congresspeople about some social spending program, for example:

The beauty part of being a poster instead of an IRL kingmaker (and there aren't many beauty parts to being a poster instead of an IRL kingmaker) is that I don't have to make that decision. My post is not country to put the country in danger. So, I decided to leave it as it was.

"Make sure your brain is engaged before you put your mouth in gear." You ever hear that one, Donny?

Seriously, he's half right. Golf should only be played where grass grows without irrigation, and that rules out California, Arizona, etc. This would make it a rich person pastime, since people would have to fly from Los Angeles to Atlanta for a few holes of golf. This drought stuff is serious, my fellow citizens. If you live in Cali and like to golf, better move to Indiana or get a new hobby.

His courses and design scheme look tacky, much like everything he puts his name to.

He even pushed around Scottish courses that had their own history, and character to put more of his generic Trump Golf courses.

Trump Scotland is a good course, not North Berwick or The Old Course, but what is?

The members of his private courses like them.

Beside the Monster I will never play a Trump course. I mean in Scotland you are spouled for choice. And Dunbeg? There is a reason why I never played it before. That reason is Lahinch.

On balance, Trump is good for golf. He pays his employees a good wage, better than most in the game. No architect has complained about working with him, in public or on background.

I sided with the land owners, and others who were concerned about the environmental and country-wide impact of his style courses.

Reading your post, does not really change where I side in the issue, but does mitigate a little bit, my feeling of disdain towards Trump and his courses... Just a wee bit.

He built a true links course, of which there are few in the world. Anybody but Trump building it there would be few problems. If Mike Kaiser was building it they would throw him a party.

Trumps first few courses are not good. Artificial waterfalls, over the top grooming, flowerbeds etc. His last few really embrace the modern aesthetic of more natural golf.

Tom Doak gave Trump scotland a 7. That is a good number.

Thu Jul 2, 2015, 01:30 PM

The average round is probably 3 - 4 hours, depending on the course and how busy it is. If you think about it, $50 is pretty cheap for a half day in the great outdoors. Comparable to or less than what you will spend per person at a major league baseball game, for example. And there are many options for cutting the cost a lot more - down to about $15 dollars for nine holes on a week night, for example. Also many courses have senior and junior discounts which will keep the cost to under $30 for 18 holes walking.

As for equipment it is quite possible to pick up a good used set of clubs for under $100. Or borrow a set from somebody - a lot of golfers have a spare set which they have upgraded from. Starting out, it is not the equipment which matters, it is the form. You really don't need anything else. You can wear regular athletic shoes, and gloves are cheap if you think you need them.

Not a poor man's game but certainly not only a rich man's game either.

All because he daddy left him enough money to invest in hotels, golf courses, etc. Most of which he promptly lost, by the way, and then some. He has managed to survive as a businessman thanks to gullible investors who are taken in by the Trump name.

I get it. I enjoy games and gaming. I mean, I have played many versions of "put the ball in the hole" but none off them have brought me the total satisfaction and oneness with the universe they seem to instill in others.

Maybe I am just obtuse? I do love playing games. Dodge ball, Baseball, Kick the Can, Chess, Tennis, Asteroids, Scrabble, Basketball, Ultimate Frisbee, Snooker, Freeze Tag. It's fun to play games. Hellish to watch mind you, but fun to play.

For others, it is life itself. Heck, our highest paid College and University educators in each state are game teachers so they take it quite seriously.

Don't know. I'll just keep waiting. Maybe I'll get the bug.
