CNN to broadcast corporate propaganda as news?

In a 1958 speech to the Radio and Television News Directors Association, veteran CBS journalist Edward R. Murrow told a roomful of TV executives, “We are currently wealthy, fat, comfortable and complacent.” The anchorman, who used his position to take on powerful politicians such as former Wisconsin Sen. Joseph McCarthy and issues such as segregation, cautioned that the new medium was being used to “distract, delude, amuse and insulate” the public.

Almost 60 years later, Murrow’s warning has gone unheeded by the corporate broadcast media. On June 8, CNN unveiled “Courageous,” a new production unit and an in-house studio that would be paid by advertisers to produce and broadcast news-like “branded content.”

“This isn’t about confusing editorial with advertising,” CNN executive Dan Riess told the Wall Street Journal. But a corporation going beyond advertising on a channel and funding the network to produce PR segments made to look like news is exactly the kind of confusion Riess is referring to.

One can't help but wonder if Super-PACs will be allowed to use this service to blur the line between campaigning and "news".

4. God I miss Murrow. He was the guy who did the news when I started listening, in my teens.

He did his best to keep us informed in spite of the pressures from the inside. Fortunately, thanks to him, I know the difference between hard news and tabloid distraction, which is what we get now.

7. TV is losing viewers to the internet. I was among the first to go.

I don't think this proposal is anything new. The TV news actually became a corporate mouthpiece long ago.

Probably in the 1970s. The change was gradual. Many did not notice it. But with the Reagan administration, the change became ingrained in the networks' news organizations as the equal time for different ideas concept was rejected.

Now, we go to the internet to find the truth, not to the TV. I feel sorry for people who do not have good access to the internet. They remain misinformed.

We have had to choose between internet and cable. Both are expensive. We chose the internet. Can't be on the computer and watching TV at the same time anyway.

Who needs cable? I certainly do not. Can't stand the stupid sit-coms and reality shows, and for just a few dollars a month you can subscribe a a channel you especially like such as HBO.

I felt bad for the poor girl, but the 24/7 hour pounding to discredit a Democratic Congressman was the last straw for me.

There's nothing future tense about CNN broadcasting corporate propaganda.
