The sister of the man accused of killing nine people at Emanuel AME Church has launched an online campaign to raise money to pay for her wedding and honeymoon after a planned June ceremony had to be cancelled in the wake of the massacre.
Amber Roof has started a Go Fund Me page and is asking for $5,000 to cover lost wedding costs, to pay bills, and to send us on our dream honeymoon. She pledged to donate 10 percent of the money raised to Emanuel AME Church.
As of this morning, $1,490 had been pledged.
...............
On her page, Amber Roof said her wedding was supposed to be the day every girl dreams of, with the perfect venue and vows ready to be read.
The entire statement on her GoFundMe page read:
As many of you know Michael and I had to abruptly cancel our wedding day, due to the tragedy that occurred in Charleston. June 21st was suppose to be the happiest day of our lives. It is the day every girl dreams of, it was the day we dreamed of. We had each other, we have the perfect venue, and we had our vows ready to be read. We were ready! We had planned out every detail for months and months. It was going to be the PERFECT day!
Our wedding day was suppose to be the most important and special day of our lives. It was suppose to start our lives together with our new family. Our day was the exact opposite. Our wedding day was full of sorrow, pain, and shame, tainted by the actions of one man.
The Charleston Massacre took place and our lives were forever changed. The media abused our privacy and published all of our wedding information and destroyed our dream day. Destroying the first day of Michael and my life together.
We cancelled our wedding to protect our family and mourn the lives of those lost. Many friends and family members came into town and took time off of work to be there for us. We could not ask you to do that again.
We would like the chance to start our lives on a postive note. Therefore, we have decided to start a Go Fund Me account. We know money cannot replace the wedding we lost and our perfect day, however it will help us to create new memories and a new start with our new family.
Money raised will be used to cover lost wedding costs, to pay bills, and to send us on our dream honeymoon. 10% of all funds raised will be donated to Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. We thank you for any contrabution you can make.
Our lives have been forever changed and touched by all the love and support you have shown us through this difficult time. THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS! GOD BLESS!

I was hoping to see that go-fund-me had removed it because of the total callousness it shows. As others have already said, being inconvenienced by having to move your wedding date doesn't come close to being able to call yourself a 'victim' in this situation.

(55,445 posts)and evidently she is still alive, which is more than many of the *real* victims can claim...

(15,031 posts)I understand her motivation, and don't hold what her brother did against her, but certainly there are better ways to handle this -- scale back your expectations, Amber, and recognize that others lost far more than you.

(21,506 posts)She certainly isn't responsible for his actions but it strikes me as somewhat more than a coincidence that this happened in such close proximity to her wedding.
No matter what this seems very callous and self centered to me. It might even speak to the upbringing she and her brother had.

(2,065 posts)Yes, people lost their children and parents in a hate filled massacre, but my wedding day was ruined, RUINED! !
If my brother had done that, honeymooning and self promoting internet pages would be the LAST thing on my mind right now.

(90,690 posts)...of the hideous losses others have suffered.
If she had even an ounce of self-awareness or compassion for others she would have gone into a period of very private mourning and have a very private wedding, and hope to God no one recognizes her on the street as being related to Dylann.
Maybe, just maybe, something can be salvaged from this fiasco, and not what she thinks. Maybe her fiance will reconsider what kind of woman he is engaged to, and run like hell.

(16,846 posts)She thinks the tragedy is that her wedding got ruined. Nine people die, yet it's all about her.

(90,767 posts)... mass murder committed by my own brother, by asking strangers for money.
How does that even enter your mind? Do you sit around thinking, 'Gee, how can I benefit from my brother's 9 murders?', or, 'Someone owes me for this?' ?????
What exactly goes through your mind to do something like that?
I know she's not guilty of her brother's crimes, but damn!
No one is saying she should shrivel up and die but a low profile for the sake of the dead and their families isn't exactly asking too much.
I know the media will be on the family's every move but to put yourself out there like that? To make yourself so conspicuous?
Tacky doesn't come close to describing it.

(14,691 posts)it was removed due to the negative comments. My reaction to her GoFundMe appeal which I did not look at is: This violent event wasn't her fault but she isn't "entitled" to a big deal wedding. Get married before a Justice of the Peace and file this experience under "Shit Happens." Unlike the victims, she and her fiance are alive.

(16,399 posts)But it was ruined by too much talk of pesky black folks dying at the hands of her waste of sperm racist brother.

(5,704 posts)In as much the kid killed 9 people, his siblings are not responsible, they never knew what he was thinking. It is really sad especially with more churches being burned after the killings!
Let's put our heads together to fight effing racism in the South! How can we do that, I have no idea, just look at Trump and his racist comments and he gets a percentage higher than a normal person.l Just goes to show you that conservatives do not like progressives!
ladyVet
(1,587 posts)But, even if they didn't, even if his actions came as a total, out of left field surprise, expecting strangers to foot the bill for a wedding and honeymoon after people died is outrageous.
Lots of other people -- thankfully some of them same-sex now-- have had low-key weddings and no honeymoon at all, and been perfectly happy.
You want to know how to end racism? And not just in the South, because it's everywhere? Stop giving people a pass for stupid shit like this, for one thing. Want to stop Donald Trump? Stop going to his casinos, or staying in his hotels, or doing whatever it is that makes him money. Make it clear to the network that you refuse to watch any more of their shows, or buy anything from anyone who sponsors his show, if he's allowed to stay on.
Raise your children to accept people different from themselves. Raise them to respect themselves and others. Raise them to be able to think for themselves.
It's not perfect, but it's a start.
