Dylann Roof’s sister appeals for donations to pay for wedding, honeymoon after church massacre

The sister of the man accused of killing nine people at Emanuel AME Church has launched an online campaign to raise money to pay for her wedding and honeymoon after a planned June ceremony had to be cancelled in the wake of the massacre.

Amber Roof has started a Go Fund Me page and is asking for $5,000 to “cover lost wedding costs, to pay bills, and to send us on our dream honeymoon.” She pledged to donate 10 percent of the money raised to Emanuel AME Church.

She and her fiance were to be married June 21, four days after her brother, 21-year-old Dylann Roof, allegedly gunned down nine worshippers attending a Bible study at the historic black church, allegedly in an attempt to start a race war. He is being held without bail in the Charleston County jail and faces nine counts of murder.

Update (1:30 p.m.): The Go Fund Me page for Amber Roof has been taken down. Nearly $1,700 had been raised by that time.

Maybe instead, thank your lucky stars nobody shot you, and go get married at the County Clerk's office. Just look for the gay couples standing in line...

this was a bit much. She and her fiance can go to the courthouse and get married like thousands of other people (including a whole lot of happy gay couples now). They can save their money and throw a party or go on a nice honeymoon someday, but this request was pretty tacky.

Yes, this is tacky, but a lot of Go Fund Me stuff is tacky. At least she's pledging 10% of the proceeds to the church her shithead brother shot up.

realizes that although she cancelled her wedding, she still had to pay for it. Most wedding businesses aren't going to refund anything for canceling 4 days before the event. Ditto if she already had a honeymoon paid for. So she's not married, is broke or in debt over the wedding and honeymoon that didn't happen, and has the appalling grief over what her brother did.

I do feel sorry for her, trying to start a marriage under those conditions, and I probably would have given a few bucks, because I gave a few bucks to uninsured idiots who didn't sign up for health insurance and . I don't understand the pile-on mentality. She would have certainly got the message when no one donated, but people have felt obliged to tear her to pieces and tell her to pull herself up by her bootstraps. That makes them better than her? (And she does look like just a kid, which is some excuse. I don't know what the commenters' excuse is.)

And it's not comparable to helping someone with health care.

She lost some money which should have gone towards a wedding and honeymoon. That's nothing considering what happened.

Just because Dylann Roof is a racist scum sucking pig doesn't mean his sister is too.

Second, at least she wanted to do something good with the site and donate part of the funds to the Emanuel AME Church.
