First Read: Donald Trump vs. Macys. The battle over the Ex-Im bank. Conservatives decrying the same-sex marriage ruling, immigration reform and normalization of relations with Cuba. A lot of stories in the past week have demonstrated how the Republican Party just isnt a reliably comfortable home for big business anymore. A big part of that has to do with the fast-changing landscape on social issues. Big brands raced to find catchy ways to embrace the same-sex marriage decision last week even as the 2016 Republican candidates denounced it. As weve seen with the spectacularly quick race of businesses like Macys and now professional golf organizations away from Donald Trump, companies had no interest in being associated with anti-Latino statements.
This is all for financial reasons, by the way; businesses have decided that they dont want to offend customers and they dont want to be boycotted. Thats a cynical way to look at, we know. But it also shows just how influential groups like Latinos and the LGBT community have become not just politically, but when it comes to purchasing power as well.

(128,979 posts)that 35 years ago, Raygun courted the far-right social conservatives... and then threw them under the bus in favor of big business once he got elected, and then re-elected. Then Shrub did the same and he threw them under the bus in favor of the necons when elected and re-elected (which by proxy, benefited big business).
Fast forward to today - the social conservatives are furious at being taken for granted and they have now exploded out of their pit of despair, alienating everyone and everything around them. But given this is a "capitalistic" country, guess who will "win" in the end? Of course the capitalists! The GOP RW loons can huff and puff and threaten to blow the house down but they'll never make it past the gate.

(533 posts)Is 16-30 year-olds. Corp has to stay hip so they don't tarnish their brands. Eventually, they will become progressive in economic issues too, there is no way around it; Trader Joe and Cosco have already started.
I know some progressives often come with a defeatist and negative attitude. But the future is bright.( though environmentally it may not be.) it won't happen tomorrow, but it will happen. The Reagan revolution was just a racist backlash blip that is almost petered out.
