Why Are Conservatives Defending Donald Trump?

Jonathan Chait: “It is not politically significant that Donald Trump would claim to be running for president, that he would say something flamboyantly ignorant, or that he would ‘surge’ to ‘second place’ in polls by using his name recognition to get into double digits in a splintered field. What is significant and genuinely disturbing, not to mention poisonous to the Republican Party’s electoral interests, is the fact that conservative thought leaders feel compelled to defend Trump’s nativist ramblings. And not just bottom-feeding outlets like the Daily Caller and Breitbart, either. National Review editor Rich Lowry writes in Politico that Trump ‘has a point.'”

live TV, the right will figure out a way to be OK with it.

Trump would explain that as brutal as this seems, it is necessary if we are ever to teach these people something, etc.

But Christie brings authority into the race with him and they crave authority figures. Christie's problem is that he hugged a black guy and they all remember that.

Should be interesting to watch.

Where I live there is a lot of very real anger at the government over the undocumented community which has grown significantly over the last 15 years. I can't remember ever hearing anyone say a bad thing about the community or individuals (other than about specific individuals who were arrested) or calling for deportation. But I hear LOTs of bad things about how the government needs to fix things - education, crime, jobs, etc. - and stop the growth. Most of the problems are not specific to the undocumented community are made worse by it.

There are very real problems and politicians on both sides from city to federal level talk a lot but haven't done anything to stop the growth or address the problems. I know both Rs and Ds who want to hear something different.
