http://www.commondreams.org/views/2015/07/01/people-and-planet-first-moral-authority-climate-justice-and-new-economyPope Francis has asked Naomi Klein a self-described secular, Jewish feminist, to play a pivotal role in changing our politics, economics, cultures and morality, so that we may save civilization and perhaps our species, from the ever increasing global climate crisis. Here is a quote from her initial remarks:
What we must always remember is that its not too late to veer off the dangerous road we are onthe one that is leading us towards 4 degrees of warming. Indeed we could still keep warming below 1.5 degrees if we made it our top collective priority.
It would be difficult, to be sure. As difficult as the rationing and industrial conversions that were once made in wartime. As ambitious as the anti-poverty and public works programs launched in the aftermath of the Great Depression and the Second World War.
But difficult is not the same as impossible. And giving up in the face of a task that could save countless lives and prevent so much sufferingsimply because it is difficult, costly and requires sacrifice from those of us who can most afford to make do with lessis not pragmatism.
It is surrender of the most cowardly kind. And there is no cost-benefit analysis in the world that is capable of justifying it.

(3,859 posts)I would love to see him evolve on human rights for LGBT people. I don't think it will happen overnight, because of the centuries of immoral teachings in the RCC. But if any Pope can do so in the near future, it might be him, given his liberalism in so many other areas.
In the mean time, I hope all people will see a way to join in this nascent planetary movement to save civilization from our current path toward climate doom. I loved Bernie's strong comments last night about leading the world toward a sustainable future!

(5,946 posts)I will support Obama on civil rights, both black and gay. But not on the trade.
I will support the pope on Climate change and fighting poverty but not on abortion and gays and women and well lots of churchy things.
support ideas, not people.

(5,946 posts)long ago people criticized FDR for taking contributions from communists - he said just because they support him does not mean he supports them and did not give the money back.
If there is something we believe in, we have to get as many allies as we can, on different topics they will be different people. It is not as if we get to vote for Pope, this is probably one of the better popes of my lifetime., But, sure he has more to change, He already said something about catholics not breeding like rabbits. you never know how people will change.

(81,267 posts)Do they turn around and help people with it? Help people in various kinds of great need? Well, I'd daresay that money would not otherwise have gone toward helping people in need. But then I'm as Machiavellian as the next guy.

(45,319 posts)spite of over a year of being urged by other faith leaders to do so. Now he's speaking as if he was the leader, but he has yet to answer the call to divest.
From last year:
Multi-faith groups in Australia and North America have sent a letter to the pope saying it is "immoral" to profit from fossil fuels.
The letter, shown exclusively to the Guardian, says 80% of global fossil fuel reserves must "stay in the ground" if dangerous climate change is to be avoided.
"We urge you, as a person held in high esteem by many millions around the world, to speak clearly about the place of divestment from fossil fuels as one significant means to avert the worst of climate disruption," the letter says.
"You could have a desperately needed influence on the direction humanity takes from here. We urge you to use this influence."

Today:
The Vatican may consider, but is not committed to, divesting its holdings in fossil fuels, a Catholic church official has said, despite Pope Franciss call for bold action to fight climate change and global warming.
The statement made at a press conference on Wednesday to discuss the popes recently released encyclical on the environment is likely to disappoint climate activists, who have praised Pope Franciss essay stressing that climate change is mostly a man-made problem.

(3,859 posts)I did not know that. I expect Klein to lobby him hard in that regard. And given his bona fides in other areas, I have to believe he can be lobbied due to the moral logic. The ethics of this struggle is difficult for so many major governments and entities. That's how we have come to this desperate point. I strongly believe Naomi will do the right thing. I hope he does also.
Bluenorthwest
(45,319 posts)She can 'lobby' him to do the thing she claims he's leading the world in doing. She's hitched her wagon to this anti choice, anti gay cleric because he's supposed to actually be righteous in some way, leading us all in how to save the world. But he is not doing that, others are.
That encyclical was also anti choice, I assume Kline supports that aspect as well, as she is motivated by the language of the encyclical and not to the actions of the Church and Pope.
Those who preach at others to do that which they don't do themselves are the very corruption we must fight.

(34,845 posts)...you're right. But there is nothing -and I mean nothing- more important than addressing climate change.
Not being part of a persecuted minority, my opinion will never be a centerpiece of the discussion but I ask that you make the sacrifice of supporting him in climate change without reservation.
And work on the other issues separately.

(24,010 posts)I had to rub my eyes and look again at this one.
This is quite amazing. I could never have predicted it, nor I think could anyone have predicted it.
I think we need to see how important alliances are in this, the most serious crisis that the human race has ever faced, at least in historical times. We are looking at the end of life on earth, the end of the earth as a living planet, and our own end, the end of the human race. This is very, very, very, VERY, *VERY* serious! It is without precedent. Our planet is, literally, dying--from the greed of a few, and over-consumption by large groups of people, including us here in the USA.
To survive this developing catastrophe, and restore our beautiful earth, a communal spirit has to arise. Pope Francis is saying: we are all in this together. And he is so right. He is so right! THAT'S what we need to see, and do. We must pull together. We MUST!
I have my problems with Frances about current and past church teachings about women, and about gays. I have said in the past that the male prelates of the Catholic Church need to put on sackcloth and ashes and APOLOGIZE to women for 1,500 years of hatred of women and the death and torture and oppression of women, all in egregious violation of the teachings of Jesus, all spitting in Jesus' face, you might say, just like the Roman soldiers. The male churchmen have committed the grave sin of self-worship, compounded with hypocrisy! And they need to purge themselves on this very grave sin.
I will give up my desire for an apology if current policy is transformed into a truly CHRISTIAN policy. And, more than this, I will put my historical anger aside, and not demand anything of the Church hierarchy if they will help us stop global warming and help us restore our Mother Earth.
That is so transformative, I think, that it will transform everything. It will make us all brothers and sisters...I was going to say "again," but instead I will say, for the first time.
Brothers and sisters. You don't banish your brothers and sisters to Hell for what you believe are their "moral failures." All are welcome at the table. All are welcome at the hearth. All of us together can transform the very purpose of human life, from mere survival (and greed is just the survival instinct writ large) to the prosperity and success of all things including each other. There is no room for hatred and rejection in this House of Earth. Our fear of NOT surviving is what is crumbling our beautiful home. And that is when a family must pull together. No exclusions. No moral superiority. No hatred. No rejection. Food, warmth, shelter and comfort for all. And if our house comes down, we build it again. That is the true nobility of the human race--our ability to pull together in the worst of circumstances. And Pope Francis and Naomi Klein are excellent examples of it.
