The fallout from Donald Trumps outrageously offensive campaign speech and his refusal to back down from his racist remarks about Mexican immigrants is continuing to grow, as businesses race to sever ties and punish him for his bigotry. The most recent organization to do so is Chicagos 5 Rabbit Cerveceria, a brewery which formerly made the house beer for the Trump Towers ReBar.
The brewery joins a growing list which includes such big names as the Univision television company, NBCUniversal, and Macys department store. We would be doing an injustice to the community we serve (and live in) by engaging in business with someone who does not accept our role in society and expresses a rhetoric of hate and ignorance towards us says co-owner Andre Araya, who was born in Costa Rica before travelling to the US to study at Cornell-hardly a criminal. In an effort to communicate how the company really feels about Trumps remarks, they have taken the remaining Trump house draft and renamed it Chinga Tu Pelo (F*** Your Hair).
In a show of solidarity, Ginos East pizza joint has purchased the renamed beer and will donate all proceeds to the International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago. Its an inspiring stand of communal unity against hatred and bigotry that fortunately seems to be coming together more and more often in our nation- from anti-gay discrimination in Indiana to the effort to topple the Confederate flag, and now the backlash against Donald Trumps inexcusable racism.
On a personal level
one of the things that scares me the most is sending the wrong message to my daughters. We are active members of this immigrant community and we need to stand up for ourselves, and more importantly, for those who do not have the voice or means to do so. The very foundation of the United States of America was built on acceptance and inclusion. That is what drew us here, and that´s what why we feel so strongly about this says Araya, and hes absolutely right. This nation was founded by immigrants, and our diversity is one of our biggest assets and one of our most wonderful features.
