Pregnant woman challenges pro-lifers to pay her $1 million in 72 hours or else she terminates her baby* Anonymous essay on one-page website offers challenge to pro-lifers
* Writer claims to be a 26-year-old woman and seven weeks pregnant
* The state where she studies 'recently passed restrictive abortion laws'
* If she gets $1m 'she will have the baby, put the money in child's trust fund'
* Otherwise 'she will go through with abortion scheduled for July 10'
In an anonymous essay titled 'How much would you pay to stop an abortion?', the writer claims she is 26 years old, seven weeks pregnant, with every intention of aborting her fetus.
But if she receives $1 million in 72 hours she will allegedly have the baby, put it up for adoption, and put every cent into a trust fund for the child to access at 21.
Otherwise, every donation will be returned and she will go through with the abortion she has scheduled for July 10.
Writing one-page website called prolifeantiwoman.com, the woman says the rallying cry is a protest against 'extremely restrictive abortion laws' recently passed in the state where she attends graduate school.
The laws, she writes, require women to wait 72 hours after a doctor consultation to have an abortion.
Reaction online has been mixed.
Critics have questioned the validity of the anonymous writers point, and one Twitter user wrote: 'How much do you love your unborn child? Not very much considering you are holding it for ransom.'
Another, however, has tweeted: 'This is... brave and amazing.'

Find her tactics a bit shocking, but perhaps a legitimate call-out of the so-called "pro-life" camp.
I believe she's leveraging her "choice" into a monetary transaction in order to highlight the utter hypocrisy of the "lifers", who love the fetus, but hate the child.
Essentially, she's saying: "OK 'pro-lifers', put your money where your mouth is. You 'love' life so much? Well, then, poney up to support it."

(15,445 posts)That's the QUESTION!
If this is legit, it's brilliant. If she just thought up a way to yank the 'lifer's' chain and milk them for some money at the same time...who can say?
That's what I meant by the 'get-rich-quick' scheme.
Who knows if she'll give it back once it's in the bank...

(9,610 posts)I am very torn by this OP. I will have to think about it more. I do believe her to be in the wrong with this request for money or else.
edit - I now see that she claims that she will not keep any of the money. My vote is that the whole thing is a scam.

(16,856 posts)or a small group before she posted it. They must be getting a good laugh out of this shit. I hope she raises the money and says, "nah, think I'll have that abortion." Or maybe she'll announce that she isn't pregnant. It's going to piss off some RWers, so of course I'm loving it.

(6,342 posts)It's damn near impossible to raise a million bucks in 72 hours for any cause (unless you are running for political office and favor corporations, of course).
It's set up to fail to reach the mark...which is probably the point. She wants the abortion, but wants to make a political point at the same time.
She has every right to terminate the pregnancy. But this is kind of stupid. 99% of pro-lifers won't even hear about this story. Most mainstream news outlets won't touch this story until it's over for ethical reasons. Then once the abortion happens, Fox News will rake the woman over the coals.

(602 posts)I approached protestors at a few clinics with the option to sign a contract of financial support for the future child of any client who chose not to have the abortion. With almost no exceptions, I was told to f*ck off. (The exceptions didn't sign; they were just more polite in their refusal.)
So at least in the 90s, the amount of cold hard cash they were willing to pay to stop an abortion was $0. Big surprise.

(7,231 posts)Although this woman is rather course in holding her child ransom, she has found the one way to throw this right back into the fundies' faces.
If those fundies are willing to "gofundme" bakers going out of homophobic business, are they willing to shill out for an unborn child?
Part of me hopes this is a hoax. Part of me hopes this is real. The fundies need a reality check - a big one.
