A similar thing happened with station wagons. When they were cheap, so many old SWs were destroyed in demolition derbies that now finding a nice survivor is hard. They're also pretty pricey.

(55,445 posts)I remembered reading back in the 90s that they needed four cars on average to make an episode -- One was a jump/stunt car, one was a 'nice' car for the close-ups, and the other two were used as needed... And on average they wrecked/ruined/destroyed one car for every episode...

The number of GLs they made is in the range of 250 to 320. It's more than "a few dozen," tho.

All these yahoos walking around draped in the flag this weekend are disrespecting it far worse than if they just burned on.

(16,399 posts)I think there's a huge difference between painting or stickering an emblem on a car that's not an actual flag and draping the actual fabric over it or one's self or other inanimate objects.

I also like to remind people that the flag code is not in any way law. There is no punishment by the government for any violations of the code.

If his intent was to be disrespectful he probably would have left the Confederate flag on the car.
Most people celebrate a victory instead of looking for a negative that probably isn't even there.

But credit to this man for doing this, he didn't have too and doing this is certainly going to get his inbox filled with less than friendly emails.

(658 posts)I live in Milton, FL. Literally a stones throw away from Bagdad, FL. I drive through Bubba's home town often and play at the same golf courses he did - and still does from time to time.
He's very generous to the courses to the point of bringing signed memorabilia to them. One of his score cards is being presented at the Tanglewood golf course club house. The man shot a 29 on the front nine there... he's so good.
If he bought the General Lee, it's his car to do with what he wants - in my opinion. I'm just glad to hear that he's doing with it something so wonderful.
The Confederate flag symbolizes a time that no American should ever forget. We should always remember, and we should always be ashamed.

(118,778 posts)that was a confederate flag painted on the Dukes' car. I did not know how to pronounce the 'n' word when I read it in To Kill A Mockingbird. I pronounced it like the African country Niger. I had never heard the word used before. I did not get that Gone With The Wind characters were in the KKK. But somehow, being that uninformed in Ottawa Canada, we were taught the 'new' history that the American Civil War was not really fought because of slavery but was fought because of state's rights. No how the hell did right wing propaganda make it all the way to early high school history class in Ottawa in 1982 where actual history did not? When did the states' rights explanation start in the USA?
