I'm not really going to shed a tear over this. People who fight for white supremacy shouldn't be honored
------------
A memorial to Confederate soldiers who lost their lives in the Civil War on University of North Carolina-Chapel Hills campus was defaced over the weekend with the words KKK, murderer, and Black Lives Matter.
The memorial depicted a Confedate soldier, popularly known as Silent Sam on campus, and is dedicated to the 300-odd UNC alumni who fought and died for the Confederacy. Damage to the memorial is estimated at over $1,000.

(111,339 posts)since Silent Sam represented the average fighter, a conscript who had no say in the matter, much as the slaves had no say in their employment. Every man of fighting age who wasn't physically or mentally incapable was shoved into a uniform, handed a gun, and told to kill conscripts on the other side. They were the 99% of their day, sons of craftsmen and businessmen and small landholders who didn't own slaves.
This is not going to make anyone any friends, it's only going to piss people off since Silent Sam is such a revered figure on campus. He's called "Silent Sam" for his habit of firing his rifle every time a virgin (of either sex) walks past.
Supposedly the statue of Garibaldi in Washington Square by NYU will pull his sword the rest of the way out of his scabbard when a virgin (of either sex) walks past.

(52,589 posts)My ancestors were Whigs in the NC Legislature and led the fight against secession. We won the 1st vote but when the people of Sampson County sent my ancestor to vote with the Union again, we lost that vote due to the fact in between the first and second vote, all surrounding states had joined the rebellion after South Carolina fired on FT. Sumter. Sorry, just an interjection of history and that my family had fought in the War Of Independence (we're sons of the Revolution) and the family remained loyal to that they had achieved. Defacement of the CSA will always be ok with me and I live here. Darkness deserves no reprieve.

(5,417 posts)Regardless of the target. Plus, there were a lot of Americans that died on both sides of the civil war. I see no problem showing respect to all involved.
I've been to Germany and seen memorials to their soldiers in WW1 and WW2. I do not agree with German's involvement in either wall, but I see no problem showing respect, and I would be against anybody vandalizing it.
