Occasionally, a breakup proves a big mistake for both parties. Witness the strange case of MSNBC and Keith Olbermann.
While their relationship was often rancorous, Olbermanns lengthy and biting commentary not only branded and defined MSNBC but set the channel on its current course. Indeed, the NBC-owned networks entire lineup of primetime hosts Rachel Maddow, Lawrence ODonnell, Chris Hayes were essentially spun out of Olbermanns ribs, as management sought to build on Olbermanns success by becoming a liberal counterweight to Fox News Channel
Since leaving MSNBC, however, Olbermann hasnt exactly found particularly hospitable homes, even if the salaries were, admittedly, quite nice. He regularly chafed at the amateurishness of Current TV, since rechristened Al Jazeera America; and never found his groove at ESPN, which began by scheduling his show at a time when it was frequently delayed by live coverage that ran over its allotted window, pushing him into the wee hours of the evening.
Olbermann is obviously a polarizing figure, but hes too marketable a talent to stay on the sidelines for long, unless he chooses to do so. The real question is where he can find another platform that provides him the elbow room he needs to operate and thats desperate enough to absorb the headaches historically associated with hiring him.
Of course, when you think about it that way, its hard to imagine a more logical home for Olbermann than (gulp) MSNBC, which has never fully recovered from losing him. Granted, such a reunion would certainly establish the host and his former network as a sort-of TV version of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. Yet while those two might not have been a match made in heaven, for all the histrionics and fireworks, when all was said and done, they just sort of belonged together.

(5,624 posts)previously burned bridges. HBO will give him the production quality and level of professionalism he expects, as well as the editorial freedom to go after the story. They seem interested in establishing a liberal block of programming with Bill Maher and John Oliver. Having Olbermann delivering hard news aside Maher and Oliver's commentary would be awesome. But chances of that happening are slim.

(39,343 posts)Video or not, it'd be up to him, but I don't know if he could do more than an hour a day. If he could, he could always try the route that Mike Malloy and Stephanie Miller have gone... build a studio in your basement and DIY a podcast to radio or subscribers.
I know it's not ESPN or even MSNBC money, but it's a way to get yourself out there.

(22,000 posts)I don't see why he doesn't just semi-retire and set up something online. In fact he could do election night coverage and bring on his own guests. The great thing is he could say whatever he wants to and he wouldn't be fired.

(3,123 posts)The only thing the so-called networks give a shit about is $$$$. Just about every media outlet on the planet knows that Keith can bring it, but his ego sadly has been his Waterloo for too long. Honestly, I would rather see him online, saying whatever he wants, with no restrictions and no filter. Trust and believe, if he can burn up Twitter he certainly can have his own website and fire the flames! That would be one more reason for me to tune in!

But I would like to see Keith on somewhere, for news and comment.
Preferably not the corporate media, where he would be limited/edited in what he could talk about,
as the current MSNBC group is. They probably wouldn't even take him on at MSNBC, the way things are now.
But, alas, the money ain't so good outside the Korporate Media.
But I do miss Keith's political rants, bigtime.
They are just too incorrect for today's MSNBC.

(1,278 posts)The idea of "special reports" and shows not named Parts Unknown is not particularly appealing for a News Network entering the Election season. 9p ET would be perfect for Keith Olbermann, as long as he is allowed to cover stories not parroting the rest of the day, such as The Lead, Situation Room, Erin Burnett, and especially AC 360. Sign him to a deal up to the Inauguration in 2017, then he can transition into sports. CNN/Turner has a piece of MLB, which he is quite good at, plus he can comment on all sports unlike ESPN, who kowtows to the NFL and College Football Players, Bill Simmons, Keith Olbermann for examples.
Prediction: CBS and CNN/Turner will combine their news and sports divisions to exclude a full merger in 2016.

(5,624 posts)that goes with being a part of the M$M. Even Maddow holds back and toes the company line once in a while.
MSNBC and their parent corporation NBC will continue their road to ruin by promoting corporate yes men like Joe "dead intern" Scarbrough, Chuck "not my job" Todd, Brian "enemy fire" Williams, etc etc. They'll probably get Pat Buchannan back on the air before they'd rehire Olbermann.
This is where MSNBC is headed. More of this.

(13,596 posts)When he was with Current TV, I still loved the show despite the obvious lower production values. Sure, they made mistakes but a few times Olbermann's reaction didn't help anything. On my job and with a businesss I own, if there is a screwup, there is absolutely no reason for me to make sure all the donors/customers know about it!
With blood donors in some cases they have a right to be told if their unit was contaminated and must be discarded or anything like that. It's rare but it happens. We have staff make mistakes sometimes. One of us does not need to make a big display of how displeased we are at an idiot for all other donors to see! A few times Olbermann could have just trooped on and most people wouldn't have noticed. And you might have better staff if your network could afford them had you not sucked up all the money! If he expected the very best techs and sets, he should have demanded that in his deal to begin with.
I still hope MSNBC or anyone else brings him back. He's the best.
