There was also a 12 percent increase in overall crime during the first six months of the year over last year — the first time in more than a decade that there was an uptick, city officials said.

Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti address the city’s midyear crime numbers during a news conference at the LAPD’s headquarters in Los Angeles on Wednesday, July 8, 2015. A lot of crime peaked in the 60s and early 70s.

There was also an 18 percent increase in gang-related crimes citywide in the first six months of the year, though gang crime is still about half the rate it was seven years ago, Beck said.

It is natural for crime rates to go up and down, which happens nationwide, Jorja Leap, a UCLA professor and expert on gang violence, said by phone. In addition, Los Angeles is made up of diverse communities in which problems ebb and flow, including conflicts between gangs, she said.

feels out of control. A block where I park used to have maybe 10-15 homeless now it's solid tents and large groups all along the block.

There's a big change. Also non-violent offenders were released early due to budget cuts, that might have an impact.

Meanwhile the rents are shooting higher, all very discomforting. So easy to get used to things when the weather is nice!

and they might make a movie about you too!

The homeless thing is so common it's almost normal to meet someone you know and hear about their life in a camper on Bundy or wherever.
