She's 20 and 4. If/when she wins it will be her second Serena slam and three of four for a 2015 Grand Slam. Her opponent is the Venezuelan with Spanish citizenship, 22 year old Garbiñe Muguruza playing in her first grand slam final.
Go Serena!!!
I a tempted to use the SOWNED new word for her ownership of Sharapova.

(269,050 posts)for asking Richard Williams to allow Venus and Serena to be practice hitters for his daughter.
That's how you deal with racist assumptions.
Is that true? I never heard that.
LOL. Now he's standing in the shadow of their achievements

(348 posts)I think Serena is a vile person, although a great tennis player. Would be nice to see the Spaniard upset her. Highly doubtful though. I was so hoping Venus would knock her off.

(348 posts)this is a thread about Serena. What athletes have you seen directly threaten an official with bodily harm and then deny it 20 seconds later?
but since you insist, off the top of my head
Barry Bonds
Pete Rose
Shawn Avery
Charles Barkley (when he played, I actually find him a funny announcer)
Lawrence Taylor
Oscar Pistorius
Luis Suarez
Mike Vick

I can't STAND McEnroe even now, but Serena is a tremendous athlete and probably the best player in the game ever.
I think she and Venus conduct themselves with class. There are many who do not.

(8,028 posts)She's one of the kindest, most unassuming people in tennis. Her competition is with herself. She strives to be the best and she is.
Serena is the most talented female tennis player in the history of the sport. She's an inspiration and a role model for young girls and women worldwide.
Again, why would you call her vile? That ignorant label just doesn't square with who Serena is as a person. I hope you'll respond to my question or take back your comment.

I have the honor and pleasure to work for SW, and you are absolutely spot on. She really is all about love, joy, serenity and kindness and generosity, in everything she does. She is as fragile as she is strong, and one of the kindest, most focused people I know.
Anybody here that wants to take a shot at her, has to go through me first!

(22,457 posts)Is this some bullshit post or are you just a hater? Serena is a role model, charitable giver, humble person, and oh yeah, a great tennis player.
You know what I think is vile? It's people making stupid accusations and statements THAT HAVE NO BASIS IN FACT. You post reminds me of some small statement that someone makes and then TMZ blows it up like IT'S ACTUALLY NEWS.
Oh and for you and the other haters. A tribute to one of the all-time great players. You only wish you could do this.

(17,111 posts)If you are referring to her behavior towards a lineswoman at the US Open several years ago, you better add Johnny Mac to your list. Nobody defends that action, but that does not make her vile.
Interesting that you refuse to say what is vile about her.

Muguruza played a fantastic match!

(5,477 posts)She'd probably have 35 grand slam titles by now. She's great now and has been great, but she could have been the undisputed greatest ever if she was fully committed.
underahedgerow
(1,232 posts)her 'athletic'. What kind of 'shape' are you hoping for from the top athlete in the world?
Not committed? Hmmmm you MIGHT want to have a look at her statistics page. She average 81% wins since 1999. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serena_Williams_career_statistics
Since 1999 she's won 94 out of 116 finals. Then factor in the 10 - 15 sets X 4 that it takes to get to those finals. That's thousands and thousands of matches since 1999.
She is in the best physical condition of pretty much any athlete on the planet. She practices yoga and gymnastics, in addition to weight and flexibility and stretch training, every. Single. Day. She has as much flexibility as a ballet dancer or world class gymnast, but the strength to play for 2 hours while barely breaking a sweat and breathing hard, while her opponents are wilting in the sun after 30 minutes.
She is the simply the greatest athlete at the top of her game in the world today. I can't even imagine what you can possibly criticize!

(7,429 posts)Serena is amazing in every way.
A lot of the time it was just Venus/Serena who would win each year.
Heck look at her Doubles wins with Venus - they never lose in the Finals

She's absolutely one of a kind, I can't even think of any other athlete that's in her league, male or female, past or present, anywhere in the world. And such an amazing role model for kids and women. She lives such a clean, healthy and focused life, you have no idea!
I get very upset when ignorant people make insane claims about her using any kind of drug enhancements; these athletes have to be randomly drug tested regularly. Those folks just show up at the door, any time of the day or night, lol. She's no Lance Armstrong, that's for sure!

(32,064 posts)and Serena has done it at a time in which there is a lot more power & competition out there. It will be beyond amazing if she pulls off the golden slam next year in her 30s - and honestly given the competition she has played against (as opposed to Graf - through no fault of her own - really not having as much) she probably deserves the title of "best female player ever" right now.
I'm always happy to see a relative newbie get through as well so either way it's a great match today

(29,149 posts)The number of players who have been ranked number one and the number of grand slam winners during Serena's career is far higher than during Steffi's. There have been several outstanding players this century (including her sister), but few memorable champions during Graf's reign, which began as Evert and Martina faded and then lapsed a bit once Seles emerged.
malaise
(269,050 posts)Muguruza will beat most of the rest of them - she's bawling like a baby.
fishwax
(29,149 posts)Probably not. Graf won six of her titles while Seles was absent after the attack. But, then again, a healthy Seles and a healthy Graf might have had an Evert-Navratilova type rivalry that would have elevated them both. Either way, though, the field wasn't as deep during Steffi's tenure.
Muguruza played a great first set, and then Serena kind of settled in and figured her out.
What she is doing is amazing. There have only been about 20 grand slam titles won by women over thirty, and Serena has eight of them. And I don't think she's done.
