Jeb On ‘Work Longer Hours’: I Meant People Need To Work Full Time

After Jeb Bush’s remark Wednesday that “people need to work longer hours” as part of his plan to grow the economy, the former Florida governor clarified that he meant more Americans need access to full-time employment, rather than relying on part-time jobs.

"You can take it out of context all you want, but high-sustained growth means that people work 40 hours rather than 30 hours and that by our success, they have money, disposable income for their families to decide how they want to spend it rather than getting in line and being dependent on government," Bush said in a Veterans of Foreign Wars town hall in New Hampshire.

Bush said because factors like rising healthcare costs have made it harder for small businesses to create jobs, giving employees the chance to work more hours “has got to be part of the answer.”

Critics seized on Bush’s remark from a meeting with the New Hampshire “Union-Leader” editorial board, chalking it up as another gaffe proving Bush is out of touch with average Americans.

He's working overtime to disprove that idea.

The work week is even longer for salaried workers (an average of 49 hours), likely because employers don't have to worry about paying them overtime. According to the Gallup poll, half of salaried full-time employees said they work 50 or more hours each week.

even his clarification was about full time workers getting "up to" 40 hours/ week.

Honestly, it's pretty obvious that he doesn't know how much the average full time American worker is working per week. I suspect he read the BLS number sometime in the last and never sought clarification. I get the impression he really thinks Americans work @ 30 hours /week...

The gaffe is pure gold regardless.

he should have (and could have) said exactly that. An awful lot of people are stuck with part time jobs (that offer no benefits) and would love to be able to work full time, but it's up to employers to offer those jobs. But they won't because it's cheaper for them to employ part-time workers for whom they don't offer insurance, vacations or sick leave. So Jeb! is blowing it out his ass when he says “people need to work longer hours” means people need full-time jobs. What he really meant is that - for the benefit of the bosses - people should have two or three shitty part-time jobs so they can work longer hours and still have no benefits or job security.

I'd say he also means that people who already work long hours should work more. Increased productivity per worker means hiring fewer workers who require medical and other non-salary compensation. Ideally, there would be no overtime as well. Best of all would be salaried workers who are compensated for 40 hours and expected to work 60 or more.

But hey, Goldman Sachs just cut their maximum allowed work day to 16 hours. Things are looking up!

People with part time jobs often need two or more in order to pay the rent on unsafe housing with enough left over for bad food that leaves their bodies hungry. People are working longer hours for less and less money and that is the problem, Jebbiepoo, there is too little money circulating at the bottom to allow a real recovery.

No rich Republican putz will ever understand the demand side.

He's back peddling because there has been some anger over his first set of comments.

Translation:

"Well, when I said I wanted to screw the American worker, I didn't realize that the American worker wasn't going to let me do that without a little push back, so now I'll say I didn't really mean what I said."

Typical Bush lies. If it's a Bush and it's mouth is moving - it's telling a lie!
