Barack Obamas historic policy shift toward Cuba would be short-lived under a Marco Rubio presidency, the Florida senator has told the Guardian, one week after the White House made the final major step in renewing diplomatic ties with the Castro regime.
Rubio, a top contender for the Republican nomination for president, said he would absolutely reverse the unilateral steps Obama has taken thus far to normalize relations between the two countries including closing down the embassies that are slated to open on 20 July if he is elected to the White House in 2016.
In fact, I think theyre in violation of the law, Rubio said during an interview at the tail end of a three-day campaign swing through Iowa. The statute passed by Congress specifically prohibits many of the things he [Obama]s now undertaking. It says those things can only happen after certain conditions have been met, none of which have been met. As president, I will follow the law.
Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants, has been the leading opponent in the US Congress of Obamas overtures to the island nation.

(17,064 posts)I get tired of explaining this. Don't count Cubans among the rest of Hispanics. Non-Cuban Hispanics are solidly Dem, and want normal relations with Cuba if they give a shit at all.
Cubans are a separate subset. 1st and 2nd generations are anti-Castro and vote republican. Each successive generation less so. By 4th generation their voting patterns are similar to non-Cuban Hispanics.
IOW, the only Latino votes Rubio has locked down are those of Cubans who came on the boat and their children.
And I guess I have to point out (again) that Cubans are only about 20% of the Latinos in Florida.

(14,255 posts)will be right there next to Rubio. Supporting him. Wasserman announced yesterday that she disagrees with Obama on Cuba. This is the person who decides which politicians the DNC will help. Pretty much - DINOs.

(8,377 posts)The good news about Rubio and the Cuba thing is that the people who have been holding this country hostage to horrible foreign policy on Cuba are dying off pretty quickly now. And the younger generation is definitely not taking up the cause.
I wish the same could be said for racists. But flags are very important symbols. Getting the flag of racism out of the public space will eventually make racism a lot less acceptable. The goal should be to have the Confederate flag alive and well only in museums that show the true evil behind it -- much as the Germans keep Auschwitz on display.
IN another generation, anybody displaying the Confederate flag will should be regarded the same way we regard a Skinhead displaying a swastika.
