Hate crime charges sought in July 4 beating

http://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2015/07/08/police-will-seek-hate-crime-charges-fountain-square-attack/29867779/
Cincinnati Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell has reconsidered and is asking Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters to pursue hate crime charges in the Government Square attack that left a white man beaten and bloody on the Fourth of July.

Police Officer Alicia Essert called the beating "anti-white" in the incident report, but at a news conference about the incident, Cincinnati Police Capt. Mike Neville backed off that claim, calling it a "mistake."

"In many cases, a hate/bias relationship between the offender(s) and suspect(s) may not be easily apparent at the time of, or even shortly after the commission of the offense," police spokeswoman Tiffaney Hardy said in a release. "Often, hate/bias elements become evident only after thorough investigation and review of the available evidence."

1. Hmmm, read the article and saw no evidence of hate crime other than a group of black people beat

... up a white person.

Usually there's some declaration of intent of the actions

it kind of does look like it could be an anti-white crime judging by several videos. I surely wouldn't rule it out A very sad case and one that those with hate will use as some kind of "told you so" with their racial biases.

3. Sometimes there's a declaration or clear evidence.

Sometimes there's not. Not all hate crimes are prosecuted as hate crimes, or even readily identifiable as hate crimes. Not everything prosecuted as a hate crime is.

Most often "hate crime" is in the eye of the beholder, and the prosecutor's opinion may vary, as well as the judge's and jury's.

Imagine the races reversed, and people would be all over the hate-crime angle. "We're good, they're bad." It gets tedious.

... enforcement is involved blacks are victims of the majority of hate crime act.

The shootings in Oklahoma a couple of years ago comes to mind... those guys were going around black neighboorhoods shooting random black people and LEOs still were hard pressed to call it a hate crime.

George Zimmerman had NO REASON whatsoever to chase a teenager through a dim lit neighborhood with a gun but was never even charged with nuasance.

The guy who shot into the car with teenagers that were black, never charged with hate crime...

There are many instances in big stories if it was just one color on the other hate crime never comes up as an issue

5. I don't know if it was a hate crime, but I'm not too fond of punks who swarm attack people.
